Summary

Merham is a well-ordered 50s seaside town - the kind of town where everyone knows their place (and those who don't are promptly put in it).

Lottie Swift is an evacuee who has grown up with the respectable Holden family and loves Merham. The Holden's daughter Celia, however, chafes against the constraints on the town and longs to escape....

Worth a listen

Loved this story, took a little to keep track of the characters but you felt yourself drawn in, which made you not want to stop listening.

I wanted to like this as it's JoJo Moyes

I found this a bit of a slog to get through actually, for me it never really got going and the two main stories were unconnected and messy with a lot of peripheral activity which didn't add to the story. I wouldn't recommend this book sadly.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed the characters in the earlier part of the story, but the ones that were introduced in the second part were pretty irritating. I liked how the two parts of the story knitted together eventually.

Boring

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Just didn't seem to get going. I couldn't listen to anymore!

What could Jojo Moyes have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

More pace and more action.

Have you listened to any of Judith Boyd’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Not that I know of

Could you see Foreign Fruit being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

No

Any additional comments?

I won't be keen to listen or read any of Jojo Moyes books.

Enjoyable read

I found this so easy to emerse myself in right from the beginning. Good narration and characters. A love story from the 30's to present day, which kept me pleasantly entertained throughout. This is my second JoJo Moyes book and I shall definitely read more.

Straddled post war era & present; poorly pieced together

The story starts post WWII then jumps to the current era. I found the lacing together of the threads of the 2 stories clumsy & irritating. The stories didn’t blend smoothly & the whole tale seemed cumbersome, silly in places & really rather boring.
