Summary

Chairman Thomas Kean, of the 9/11 Commission, and Charles Vitchers and Bobby Gray, construction workers that aided in the cleanup of Ground Zero, on this edition of Fresh Air. Thomas Kean and his vice-chair, Lee Hamilton, have written a new book, Without Precedent: the Inside Story of the 9/11 Commission. The two write about the challenges of completing their work on the commission with little money, a tight timeline, constant wrangling to gain access to classified documents, and with the necessity of forging a consensus among Republican and Democratic commissioners. Then, Charles Vitchers, a construction superintendent, and Bobby Gray, a crane operator, who spent the months after September 11th sorting through the rubble of Ground Zero: recovering remains, making it safe for rescue and construction workers, and clearing the site for future development. Their experiences are recounted in a new book called, Nine Months at Ground Zero: The Story of a Brotherhood of Workers Who Took on a Job Like No Other. [Broadcast Date: August 16, 2006]
