Summary

If you are the founder and managing director of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, you may expect complete strangers to approach you with their problems when they see you having dinner with your husband in a peri-peri restaurant. And if you are Precious Ramotswe, you are a kind and helpful person who will be willing to take on a quest to find the relatives of a man who, many years ago, left the country for the uncertainties and dangers of a distant conflict.

While that is going on, though, there may be other things that claim your attention, such as the shocking news that a club that calls itself the Cool Singles Evening Club is encouraging married men to pretend to be single and meet women under false pretences. Who can be behind such a distasteful venture? Mma Ramotswe shows great tact in dealing with this situation and avoids harm to the innocent.

But, despite these rumbles, life in Botswana, that far and lovely country, continues relatively smoothly. That, after all, is what Mma Ramotswe and her friends want – and most certainly deserves.

Unsurprisingly good

Just what we expect from this series - gentle humour and all is right in the end.

Love love love these books

Superbly narrated. Wonderful storytelling. I know Mma Makutsi is fictional, but she winds me up big time. And then she manages to redeem herself. The rest are just wonderful.

The gentleness of Ma Ramotswe

I love how the writer gives the leading lady so much wisdom and gentleness. Also the beautiful voice of the reader brings me back to Africa……..

Gentle intrigue

I like the family atmospheric created by these familiar characters, led by the sensible and kindly Mma Ramotswe, everyone's best friend. The stories unwind slowly to a happy ending.
This the first one I've listened to and I found the narrator very difficult, using harsh screeching voices which were frequently unintelligible. Very disappointing, I will have to return to reading if I want more of the Ladies Number One Detective Agency.

Warm, life affirming and entertaining!

This was as good a listen as always with the ladies detective agency books, made perfect by the usual wonderful narration.

Beautifully read

I have been a fan of Alexander McCall smith for decades but have recently found his writing to be too slow and repetitive. What used to be charming is now slightly annoying.
