Summary

When nine-year-old orphan Georgia James is unexpectedly fostered by the kindly Celia and her bank manager husband, she can hardly believe her luck. But then - on her 15th birthday - she suffers the cruellest betrayal of all at the hands of her foster father and is forced to run away, leaving everything she loves behind.

Penniless, sleeping rough, Georgia is soon introduced to the sleazy Soho world of brassy strippers, sweat shops, camaraderie, and hardship. Fired by a fierce ambition, blessed with an extraordinary voice, her long struggle for fame and fortune begins. But even when she reaches the top, she finds that the scars of the past can open up to ruin her.

Suspenseful and beautiful.

What did you like most about Georgia?

I loved the story and the way the Characters were developed. I also loved Georgia's compassion despite what happened to her in her past. I also enjoyed how everything was slowly revealed in the story making me want to keep listening although I did guess who her real farther was going to be quite early on when he was introduced.

What other book might you compare Georgia to, and why?

I can't think of a book off hand but I would compare it to books by Josephine cox and Susan Lewis. It had a bit of everything in it.

Which character – as performed by Emma Powell – was your favourite?

I thought she did a fantastic job with all the characters. There was not one I could really choose.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I could not put it down once i started. If it had been a shorter book I would have listened to it all in one go for sure.

Any additional comments?

A fantastic book and a fantastic author. Lesley Pearse is one of my favourite authors and I could tell when I read this book that i would want to read more. I have since read other books by this author.

I absolutely loved this book, highly recommended

Gripping story, I couldn't stop reading it. A rich blend of history (some parts set in South East London where I have lived!), romance, resilience and social issues that still persist till this day.

Slightly disappointed!

I enjoyed the storyline of Georgia but I found the very slow voices of the men rather annoying, no one talks like that! It was also far too sexually graphic for me. I felt that it was unnecessary to give every detail of every relationship just too much when it could have been done so much more tastefully and left a little to the imagination! This spoiled the story for me.
Sorry but no I would not recommend it. I have read Lesley Pearse before and enjoyed them but this one was too much for me!

Considering it’s length, it flashed by...

This is very easy to listen to and the characters are on the whole, very well developed. The story holds its own and I didn’t get bored at any stage. Sometimes the ‘heroine’ is a little irritating but the plot Makes up for it. Well worth a listen.
