A Best Books of Summer 2019 Pick by Publishers Weekly

A Summer 2019 B&N Discover Great New Writers Selection

Inspired by Mexican folklore, Gods of Jade and Shadow is a magical, wildly imaginative coming-of-age tale for fans of Katherine Arden, Naomi Novik and Helene Wecker.

The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy scrubbing floors in her wealthy grandfather's house to do more than dream of a life far from her small town in Southern Mexico.

Until the day she accidentally frees an ancient Mayan god of death, who offers her a deal: in return for Casiopea's help in recovering his throne, he will grant her whatever she desires.

From the jungles of Yucatán to the bright lights of Mexico City and deep into the darkness of Xibalba, the Mayan underworld, Casiopea's adventure will take her on a perilous cross-country odyssey beyond anything she's ever known.

Success will make her every dream come true, but failure will see her lost forever....

Brilliant, elaborate tale

An imaginative and elaborate tale in the style of magical realism. Love this author. Narration was fantastic and had me captivated.

Needs more animation

We travelled to Central America and wanted to listen to something told by someone with a link to the place. But we were still trying to get through this 2 months later. The reading spoils the story I’m afraid.

I wouldn't normally pick up this kind of thing rea

This novel is fantasy based on around Mexican Myth of the underworld with elements of fairytale and good old adventure.

The plot kept me gripped and was tight throughout with a strong Heroine and anti hero.

This is my first time reading any work of Silvia Marino Garcia but I want to read more.

Beautiful story but something’s missing

Really enjoyed the story told here. The imagery and the world built are beautiful but there is just something missing in the writing that makes it feel a little flat. The writing itself is pretty but the emotions don’t feel all there despite the voice actor doing their best to bring it out.
I also wasn’t a great fan of the ending but that is entirely personal and others may love it.
Would still recommend the story as it does pick up towards the middle and end. It’s just the very end that bothered me.

An intriguing story but a bit flat.

This is a very intriguing tale of lush worldbuilding and spellbinding writing but the story is a bit flat and the plot uneventful. Mexican Gothic is one my favourite reads ever and I can see bits and parts from Garcia`s writing style here that I enjoyed but it still didn't fascinate me so much. The voice artist was very good at bringing out feeling.

beautiful setting but.... a bit too slow/didn't love it

I really wanted to love this book as the description sounded super appealing. I did like it and it was quite endearing but it lacked a bit of.... 'umph'.. beautiful setting though, loved the 1920 deceriptions of Mexico!
