Summary

When you spend your life at the top, there's only one direction you can go.

Pro alpine skier Aspen Archer's downfall happened in the worst possible way - a career-ending crash on a gold medal run at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Aspen packed up her broken life, picked up her broken body, and now hides in comfortable obscurity at ski resorts around the world, coaching tourists and ignoring her problems.

Cate Tierney knows who Aspen Archer is, but the last place she expected to meet the former Olympian was during a ski trip to Australia. Hurt by a past relationship, and with a teenage daughter to protect, Cate's initial reluctance is quickly overcome by her intense attraction. But with Cate's vacation ending in a few short weeks and Aspen's aversion to staying in one place, can their encounter be anything more than a fling?

When Cate discovers Aspen's secrets, Aspen is forced to face everything she'd been trying to forget. And everything she'd forgotten she wanted. Aspen already knows the route from start to finish doesn't always go as planned. Now she needs to figure out how to get herself back on course for good.

Good character development

I know there are no murders etc which is usually how lesbian romances play out, but in this story, it is about the characters themselves, their development, and frustrations with their lives, and that was interesting.

An Avalanche Of Emotions!

I don't think it's possible for me to quite articulate how amazing this book is. The storyline, the complex wonderful characters, the narrator, everything about this audiobook is phenomenal!

E.J Noyes is one of my favourite novelists, she has the ability to make the reader feel a 1000 different things all at once. Combine that with the exceptional Abby Craden and you will find yourself a blubbering, laughing, sweaty mess.

The characters in this story are so complex and so real that it makes everything feel more intense than any other book I've read. I adored E.J's "Ask, Tell" series, especially the "If I don't ask" book. However, I've never been in the army nor do I know anyone that has been in the army. So, certain aspects of it, although heartbreaking, I wasn't able to connect with it fully. This book, on the other hand, felt very real and personal to me.

I saw myself in both leading ladies and know what it's like to try and overcome real world trauma that doesn't always have to be associated with an actual war. Sometimes, the worst kind of trauma a person can face is a war that wages inside a person soul and E.J Noyes manages to capture that battle perfectly in this fantastic book!

Great story with believeable characters

EJ Noyes is a skilled writer and has written an engaging story. She convey's the complex emotions of the characters without overdoing it too much. My heart went out to Aspen, overcoming her difficulties made the story especially moving.

Abbey Craden is good at vocally differentiating between the characters, which makes the story easy to follow in audiobook format. Her somewhat irritating style of speech is improved by upping the narration speed of the audiobook, which you can do on Audible.

Gold star

Another triumphant collaboration of E. J. Noyes’ fabulous storytelling with Abby Craden’s genius narration. It’s not just the voice work that makes this so good, but the pauses, breathes and sighs combined to create the whole immersive experience. I am in total awe, as always, in the deftness of Abby Craden’s performance, which lifts E. J. Noyes’ work even higher in my estimation.
There is one sequence towards the end that had me laughing out loud and is arguably my favourite piece of Abby narration ever!
I will be re-listening to this for a long time.

Absolutely Gold. 💛

I Loved this storyline, it was a brilliant lesbian romance. Abby's narration was exceptional in bringing together this story and the complexity of the characters struggles. E Noyes is an outstanding writer and her books show that.
I definitely recommend this audio book. ❤

Gold by E J Noyes
4/5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is the first book I've read by Noyes, and it didn't disappoint. Gold was written in the first-person perspective of Aspen Archer, an ex-Olympic skier. She is now a ski instructor teaching in Australia.

Aspen meets Cate Tierney, who is vacationing with her friends and family. I relate to Cate as a 40-year-old single mum with a 13-year-old daughter.

Aspen has to do a lot of soul-searching. She’s still recovering from more ways than one when broken bones ended her pro skier career. After a quick fling, they need to work out whether they want to continue a relationship after Cate’s holiday is over. Cate also has a teenager to consider.

I’m not usually a fan of first-person POV nor third-act breakups, but the writing was brilliant. Though I did find the ending a little abrupt, perhaps an epilogue was called for. I know, ‘leave them wanting more,’ but in this case, I felt a little cheated. Everything happened so fast in a short timeframe; I think the storyline had space for growth.

definitely worth your time, I think

the pace and reality of the storyline was great. A good story covering some real life areas well without labouring any point or overdoing the detail. An easy listen
