Summary

Super fans. Groupies. Stalkers.

These people will give anything for the idols they worship, be they rock stars, actors or authors. Or even serial killers.

Lori is just such a fanatic. Her obsession is with Edmund Cox, a man of sadistic cruelty who butchered more than 20 women. She’s gone so far as to forge a relationship with him, visiting him in prison and sending him letters on a regular basis. She will do anything to get close to him, so when he gives her a task, she eagerly accepts it.

She has no idea of the horror that awaits her.

Edmund tells her she must go to his cabin in the woods of Killen and retrieve a key to deliver to a mysterious figure known only as The River Man.

In her quest, she brings along her handicapped sister, and they journey through the deep, dark valley, beginning their trip upriver. The trip quickly becomes a surreal nightmare, one that digs up Lori’s personal demons, the ones she feels bonds her to Edmund. The river runs with flesh, the cabin is a vault of horrors, and ghostly blues music echoes through the mountains. Soon they will learn that The River Man is not quite fact or folklore, and definitely not human - at least, not anymore. And the key is just the beginning of what is required of Lori to prove she’s worthy of a madman’s love.

Interesting idea…

Unfortunately it didn’t seem to go anywhere. I sort of got bored halfway in. It was recommended on a horror literature sub, but I am quite disappointed

Best keep the lights on

This one stays with you long after the last words are spoken and the sound fades

Effective, haunting and engrossing

By about half-way through I was absolutely hooked. Although the ending doesn't resolve the story as satisfyingly as I would have wanted, it's still well worth the listen.

Overall I liked the performance, especially Abby's voice. A couple of mispronounciations in places but few enough to not bother me much.

interesting read

I found this book beautifully written, as an audio I enjoyed the descriptions used to really set the scenes & feelings of each chapter. The ending is a little abrupt but throughout I enjoyed it.

Shocking subject matter, not much else

Firstly, I’m aware the struggle it must be for a single narrator to cover an array of voices, I think they tried their up,ost. However aside from the urged level of grossness when it comes to the subject matter, the tale is weak i it’s conclusion and ends in such a contradiction to the build .

Not as great as people make out

This story is narrated well enough and not boring to listen to.

I feel an opportunity for a great story has been missed here. The story starts of great and intriguing at first but sadly becomes mundane and unrealistic. This is a short story and could have been much more if given more length to explore characters and locations.

Over all the story is worth a listen, but don't expect too much depth. If you are after a quick listen that is not too taxing, give it a go, but it's definitely not the most shocking, horrific, disturbing story that it is made out to be.

Sticks with you

This book captivated me from the start. At some point, you almost feel sorry for the main character Lori, but a horrific discovery halfway through the book drastically changes that. It’s interesting to hear how warped Lori mindset is, and how she justifies her victim complex! The book delves into deep topics, so be sure to have your headphones on! Overall, it's a chilling horror novel that makes for an incredible read that will stick with you long after.

Sat in silence for a while after listening to this

I don't even have the words for this. I love books that have me questioning what is actually going on even when you react the end, you still don't have all the answers. the slow decent into madness throughout the book was fascinating, even though the main character was already a little unhinged to begin with!
