Summary

A romantic cabin getaway doesn't go exactly as planned.

High up on the windswept cliffs of Pale Peak, Faye and Felix celebrate their new engagement. But soon, a chorus of ghastly noises erupts from the nearby woods: the screams of animals, the cries of children, and the mad babble of a hundred mournful voices. A dark figure looms near the windows in the dead of night, whispering to Faye. As the weather turns deadly, Felix discovers that his terrified fiancée isn't just mumbling in her sleep—she's whispering back.

A great listen for the dyslexics

aAs a dyslexic person I struggle to read however I list to audit books. this one was great. and I big shout out to the narrator I have known idea how he did all the voices and kept them perfect throughout. Even did voices pretending to be other voices haha 👍👍

good story so far

i was quite enjoying the story but i had to stop halfway due to the voice actor, it felt more like a theatre kid who’s over doing it in a sitcom than a reading of a horror novel will read it instead

Might've enjoyed it more with a different narrator

The story is fine... But the narrator! He shouts every dialogue and murmurs the rest. Quite monotone too.

Genuinely creepy bits, buuuuut.....

... the narrator sounded like Captain Kirk (and believe me, thats not a compliment), as well as he made all of the women seem like wispy, annoying damsels, ex: Fay sounds like she's a whiny brat, and Angela sounds like some sort of Moira Rose impression.
The story wasn't awful--- as I say, some genuinely creepy bits--- but it often jerked between a feeling of complete horror to the characters acting like nothing had ever gone wrong in their lives. Ever.
And despite saying in the story that Native Americans are often exploited and made to seem like some ridiculous stereotype, I can't help but feel like it became a self fulfilling prophecy, and that the Native characters in the story were EX. PLOI. TED. (you'll see what I mean.... *cringe*)
Ive read so many reviews of this book, saying how amazing and terrifying it was, but between the narrator's dramatic choices, the disjointed shifts in tone and atmosphere, and reductive portrayal of Natives, Id say those were the more terrifying aspects of this story.....

but hey.... this is just my humble opinion, dudes.... read it yourselves, if ya like....

Exciting story!

I know this book is based on a subtreddit, and it reads like one as I often get lost in subs. The story started well and peaked as fat as the horror genre goes interms of yeah, and this will give you the creeps. I'm a big folklore fan, so I loved it all.

However, by the end, I was exhausted and disappointed.

The ending fell flat, and I feel undeserving of such a good story, and it could have been shorter by at least 10 chapters.

Narration was good and well told.

I would still recommend it, but don't expect much by way of endings.

Utterly wonderful

I absolutely loved this book! Some really creepy parts, written in a way that you can envisage exactly what’s happening. This book would make an amazing movie. Definitely a top read of 2024!

Absolute rubbish!

I was intrigued after seeing it was inspired by a reddit post and thought the concept was interesting. Unfortunately this was just terrible. I have nothing positive to say about this book. The main issue is in its conversion from a post to a novel. The author has tried to flesh out the story and give the characters more depth but I am afraid its just so amature. The dialogue is awful and its so repetitive. Wife has bad dream, wakes up, "theres something out there" she says, husband looks, nothing there. This happens over and over for the first 3rd of the book and its mind numbing. The characters actions are also questionable when it comes to dealing with the situation. Also the narrator is terrible and apparently thinks the characters are in different rooms in every scene and shouts all the dialogue. Its just bizarre. I have never given a book 0 stars before but this just drove me insane.

I was looking forward to this..

I was genuinely looking forward to this as I’ve heard nothing but good things about the book .

Unfortunately the narrator is incredibly annoying and tries to do too many voices and doesn’t pull off any of them successfully.

The book itself becomes repetitive you find yourself in the same situations time and time again.
