Summary
Read by a cast of award-winning narrators, this collection contains some of the most timeless and enchanting folk and fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm.
The Brothers Grimm collected the original fairy tales that Americans are most familiar with today. Lyrically translated and beautifully narrated by an all-star cast, these 21 tales are selected from The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales and presented just as Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm originally set them down: bold, primal, just frightening enough, and endlessly engaging.
Stories include:
- "Rapunzel", read by Katherine Kellgren
- "Cinderella", read by January LaVoy
- "Little Red-Cap", read by Simon Vance
- "Little Briar-Rose", read by Grover Gardner
- "Little Snow-White", read by Kate Rudd
- "Rumpelstiltskin", read by Jim Dale
- "The Shoes That Were Danced to Pieces", read by Alfred Molina
- "A Riddling Tale", read by Janis Ian
- "The Twelve Brothers", read by Graeme Malcolm
- "The White Snake", read by Scott Brick
- "The Elves", read by Bahni Turpin
- "The Six Swans", read by Davina Porter
- "The Twelve Huntsmen", read by Dion Graham
- "The Goose-Girl", read by Edoardo Ballerini
- "Sweet Porridge", read by Jayne Entwistle
- "The Golden Goose", read by Luke Daniels
- "Eve's Various Children", read by Roy Dotrice
- "Snow-White and Rose-Red", read by Julia Whelan
- "The Frog-King, or Iron Henry", read by Kirby Heyborne
- "The Sea-Hare", read by Mark Bramhall
- "Hansel and Gretel", read by Robin Miles
Critic reviews
"Opening with Katherine Kellgren's stately, measured reading of 'Rapunzel,' this collection presents these tales in all of their original, macabre splendor.... From Jim Dale's fully voiced reading of 'Rumpelstiltskin' to Kate Rudd's formal narration of 'Little Snow-White' and Dion Graham's lightly accented rendition of 'The Twelve Huntsmen,' these are stellar performances." good but not unabridged as stated
Not bad but it is frustrating when they are billed as unabridged and this isnt. I was listening alongside reading the original stories at the same time for my MA creative writing course and the two dont match up. Lots of altered sentences and the way words are spoken from the original.

Interesting, but short and uneven
Would you consider the audio edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales to be better than the print version?
The very last reading, by Robin Miles, of "Hansel and Gretel" was masterful. Hearing it was like discovering the tale for the first time. Overall, though, the audiobook did not adequately represent the Grimms' Fairy Tales. It seemed like a sampler of star narrators, only a few of whom really did the stories justice.
Any additional comments?
This is billed as a "full cast" recording. A different narrator reads each tale, but there is no dramatization. It is also billed as "unabridged," which it is certainly not. It contains a couple of dozen tales, some well-known, some lesser known. A more satisfying, unabridged version (of Grimms' lesser-known first edition) is the audiobook of Jack Zipes' THE ORIGINAL FAIRY TALES OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM. The readings are unexpectedly good, and there are so many tales!

Not the Fairy Tales I Remember
Would you listen to Grimm's Fairy Tales again? Why?
Yes. They took me back to another time and another place.
What did you like best about this story?
All the stories were different from the ones we have heard during our lives so this was very refreshing and very different.
Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?
Could not pick just one.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I wanted to savor each story.
Any additional comments?
Many of our traditional fairy tales have much nicer , p/c endings. I do not remember this Cinderella or Little Red Riding Hood or Repunzel or Snow White. It makes me wonder when, where and who changed these magnificent tales and why. They are a little more dark than the ones that I grew up with and I think I would have enjoyed these originals much more than the happy, smiley ones that I always heard.

True to the the historical tales… but… gruesome!
This was a well-read collection and accurate to what the Grimm’s wrote, but there is little appreciation for human life in these stories. People are constantly getting murdered by wicked kings and queens for very small offenses, or simply on a whim! Beware for small children!
