Summary

Mikey's family were Gypsies. They live in a closed community and little is known about their way of life. As he didn't go to school, the caravan became his world. But although Mikey inherited a vibrant culture, his family had a dark hidden history. Eventually Mikey was forced to make a decision – to stay and keep secrets, or escape and find somewhere to belong.

WOW Captivating

NEVER have I been so captivated by an audio book - his story is so shocking, sad, happy, funny and humbling. His narration is so effortlessly told you're living his every moment with him. I have NEVER been prouder of a total stranger in my life and would be an honour and a privilege to meet this man. Enthralling insight into a shut, clandestine world with both shockingly sad and tremendously happy moments. An absolute MUST read/listen.

Insightful for Gorgers

This story certainly makes you appreciate you didn't have his upbringing. For someone who knew nothing about gypsy life I learnt a little, not all thieves but not saints either. I wonder how the lifestyle would work if they had to do honest work to earn an income, be accountable and pay their way in society. It's not exactly an independent existence when infrastructure is used, needed but not contributed to.
The sorrowful narration got a bit annoying at times but the story was compelling enough to keep going.
Overall it was ok but not one I'll be listening to a second time.

Buy this book at once!!

I have loved this book. Thankfully there is a further book 'Gypsy boy on the run' which I purchased immediately after finishing this. What a fantastic read. heart warming, tragic, funny and fascinating insight into this quite secretive world. A very honest book, Mikey tells his own story which had me gripped. Yes the violence is shocking but you also portray the strong sense of love and family. When you summarised where everyone was at the ending I was in tears smiling. my favourite bit was when Frankie wears her yellow dress to the occasion near the end. Just made me smile so much. Mikey, thank you. You are clearly very talented and it was an honour to read your story.

I finished in One Day!!

This was an absolutely amazing book, I was hooked and couldn’t stop listening to it. The narrator was fantastic and kept me wanting more. There are parts that are really hard to listen too but I felt I owed the author it and carried on.
I highly recommend you listen and will probably listen again one day.

Beautifully read. Shockingly moving.

I was gripped to this. I cannot I understand why he doesn’t have more hate for his father than he does. It also makes me feel lucky not to have grown up in that world. A brilliant story and I can’t recommend it enough.
