Summary

Joanne Phillips’ ordeal began aged 13 when she was gang-raped in her bedroom by local boys. Following the trauma, she dropped out of school, was befriended by an older man and was forced into prostitution aged 16.

Over the next six years, she was raped by over 500 men, starved, beaten, and transported around the country to brothels. Forced to have sex with men from all walks of life including lawyers, stockbrokers, doctors, a parish councillor, Joanne was even made to have sex with her former school headteacher—who didn’t recognise her.

Every attempt to flee failed. Police warned her mother and stepdad she had chosen the lifestyle and even threatened to charge her parents with living off immoral earnings if they allowed her to move back. Escape seemed impossible, until one day she couldn’t take any more.

Just before her 21st birthday, Joanne eventually escaped her enslavement. After being left alone briefly in a London flat, where she was expected to work, she took a chance after finding a bag of money and a handgun. Fearing for her life, she fled into the night with nothing but a plastic bag of cash. After catching a train to Northern Ireland, she found her real dad and hid at his home from her pimp.

Desperate to readjust to normal life, she found a job and went on to study at university. But when she tried to explain to a new boyfriend about her past, he didn’t believe any of it was true, so she vowed to keep the abuse a secret—until years later, a conversation with one of her own teenage daughters changed her life....

Good book but so sad

A well written, interesting book with good narration. Just a sad subject matter. Jo was let down by so many people (most of all her mum!!) Someone should have noticed & helped instead of her having to help herself but she showed what a tenacious, strong, fearless woman she is!! Definitely worth a listen

HARROWING

What stood out most to me was the complete lack of parental care - there is only one fundamental person to blame for this miserable abuse of a child - her mother - who neglected early years care in order to progress herself and then turned a blind eye to what culminated - she should never be allowed to be in charge of a child ever again

A story that needs telling

This genre of book is one of my favourite, so I have come across a number of books with similar content. The content itself was good, providing an in-depth look at the types of abuse these girls endured. It isn't graphic in any way, often these books are, but it gets the story across. At times the book was frustrating - the narrator voicing the male characters in a brummy and Irish accent is probably not for everyone, I found it a bit annoying, perhaps the story could still be told without having to put that part on? It didn't take long to finish because I needed to know what happened next. It is worth a read, it demonstrates how far (or not) society still has to come in order to stop this happening to vulnerable young girls, and the corrupt judicial system who places blame on the innocent person.

Could not stop listening

I listened to the entire book from beginning to end, without break. Riveting. Harrowing and triggering but an exceptional story and beautifully written. An exquisite book detailing the experiences of a victim, though the eyes of a child with the wisdom of a survivor. Highly recommend

A Girl Worth More

First of all well done Joanne for finally getting away from this abusive man it certainly took years for you to finally realize he was living off your earnings & not caring about you. But let's face the person that started this was your mother she didn't care about what was happening to you she didn't want to listen because all she cared about was climbing up the social ladder, she didn't talk to you about boys (so obviously when the boys started raping you some how in your mind you just thought this was normally how boys treated girls) women like her don't deserve children. You didn't know how to open up to her because she never had the time to listen. She obviously had the same when she was a child as it show with your grandmothers attitude after you went out that night she just wanted you to go (why would she not want to talk & find out the reason). You were cut off from your father who you could have talked to & thankfully when you escaped you went back to Ireland & had his help.
This was a powerful account of Joanne's nightmare & I was shocked this was also happening in Dudley as I had read it happened in Telford & Rochdale with Jamaican taxi drivers & I was discussed that police didn't act on this sort of crime thank goodness now things are changing.

Harrowing story

This is a sad and harrowing story. I had to listen in short bursts as I found it too upsetting initially. Well told and powerful.

Intresting but....

Worth a listen, interesting book and harrowing storey but despite the coercion and violence I failed to understand why she felt trapped for so long in a cycle of vice and abuse. The main character was well read by Aoife McMahon but fell short on the male Manchester / Telford accents.

So sad

This story is so sad. It's hard to believe that this sort of behaviour still goes on today . Poor kids my heart goes out to them.
