About this listen

As Rome's war with Carthage continues, two friends - now on opposing sides - confront each other in one of the most brutal sieges of all time. A new Hannibal novel by the Sunday Times best-selling author of The Forgotten Legion series.

213 BC, Syracuse: Under the merciless Sicilian sun, a city is at war. Outside the walls, a vast Roman army waits. Yet the city’s incredible defences, designed by Archimedes, mean that Syracuse will not be taken easily. A veteran of the bitter war since its beginning, Quintus is ready to give his life in the service of the Republic. But dangers face him from within his own ranks as well as from the enemy - who include his former friend, the Carthaginian Hanno.

Hanno has been sent by his general Hannibal to aid Syracuse in its fight against Rome. Pledged to bring death to all Romans, he is diverted from his mission by the discovery of Quintus’ sister Aurelia, a captive within the city.

Two friends on opposing sides. A woman caught between them. They are about to meet in one of the most brutal sieges of all time.Who will survive?

Fallen in love with the Romans all over again.

Amazing balance of plot and historical detail. Bought on a whim I'm now a devotee.

Excellent as always

Ben Kane delivers every time. If you like historical fiction he is one of the best. The great characters and intertwining plots are incredible.

Amazing series

Great story and excellent characters. Full of plot twists and underhanded characters to keep you guessing. Must have series can't wait for the next series from Mr Kane.

Historic delight

I inadvertently bought the 2nd book in the series thinking it was a non fiction work on Hannibal, I don't listen or read a lot of fiction. This was a real treat though, I then went back to the 1st book and although I absorbed them in an unusual order, they are a great experience. very enjoyable. Got through the whole 3 book series (so far) in about a month of commuting and lawn cutting. Very immersive and excellent ability to connect the fiction to the fact enough to make the story gripping and educational.

great story as usual but.....a lot more bad language than his other books I have listened to. Please note this on cover as this was well past my comfort level.

What a gripping story!

A great story from the first book to this last book, (clouds of war) didn't want them to finish and look forward to the next book. A fantastic historic story and thank you Ben for your hard work and your gift of story telling. Come on Crespo!

Gripping & Authentic

This is a great way to sort out the jigsaw of Punic history whilst being grabbed by the back of the neck and driven through the storyline. The action sequences have a gritty authority. You can smell and taste the battle scenes. One of the best authors in this genre in my opinion and I have pretty well read them all.The narration is excellent.

An incredible book by and incredible author

Would you listen to Hannibal: Clouds of War again? Why?

This book has so much depth and intimacy, it is more than the classic death and and destruction found lots of historical fiction. This book, the third in the series, forms genuine connections between the lead characters and the reader during their adventures. This really is a book I simply could not put down.

Who was your favorite character and why?

During the series you come across many strong characters, but if I had to pick Corax would be my man. He embodys Rome, he is brutal yet he is kind fair and consistently a character to be admired.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The final chapter. Just wait.

Any additional comments?

Remember this is the third book, and this is not a series you will want to start half way through!
