Summary

Harrow the Ninth, the sequel to the sensational, USA Today best-selling novel Gideon the Ninth, turns a galaxy inside out as one necromancer struggles to survive the wreckage of herself aboard the emperor's haunted space station.

She answered the emperor's call.

She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend.

In victory, her world has turned to ash.

After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath - but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her.

Sealed in the Gothic gloom of the emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: Is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

Beautifully yet dark

The story is highly captivating with a unproductive narrative. A brilliant performance with every character with a constant distinct voice that's is extremely well acted. I highly recommend this book

Didn’t want it to end!

I thought that literally nothing could improve on Gideon the Ninth, but I was so pleasantly surprised by how this book expands the universe and gives us such insight into characters who, in the first novel, we might not have expected to make such brilliant protagonists. I was on tenterhooks the entire time (I cannot explain the stress I was under throughout). The only word for what Muir does is MASTERFUL - the unraveling of the complicated plot structure as the book goes on is just genius. What will I do now? What is life after this book?

What Is Going On?

If you’ve not heard the fist book DO NOT under any circumstances attempt this. If you have heard the first book and thought it was only ok, DO NOT under any circumstances attempt this. Everybody else just jump in and prepared to be confused. I have no idea what is going on and I love it.

Requires you listen carefully, well worth it.

Requires a intimate knowledge of first book to be understood even a little.
Multiple narratives are interwoven and may be difficult to follow if you are distracted but well worth the very human and endearing characters in this necromantic setting.

As the second book in the series, it might not have the same spark as the first, where the world is introduced and discovered by characters and readers alike. This second book however pulls the narrative rug from under the reader, seeding pieces of a puzzle in chapter as understanding is slowly rebuilt. This might not be to everyone liking, but if you like the world from the first book, pay attention, stick with it and you will be rewarded.
The Third book will hopefully raise the crescendo of this trilogy to its deserved conclusion.

Didn’t disappointed at all!

Like many others have said, yes many parts of this book may be confusing but that’s the point! If you give up on trying to figure out exactly what’s going on on a deeper level and just go with it, everything will be made clear and it’s all written in such a fantastic way!!

Highly recommend this book if you loved Gideon the Ninth!

Compelling confusion but brilliant

Wow this was good. I've never been so confused as to what was going on in a story before. It doesn't help when the main character who is narrating the story is as confused as hell too.
Despite this it's brilliant,so much fun and the characters are so interesting and different Harrow is just amazing and you're with her every step of the way willing her to succeed at whatever mad plan she has developed and then hidden from everyone including herself. Loved it and already bought the next book

Amazing narrator Moira Quirk just brings the characters to life. All her voices are exactly right and I can't imagine enjoying these books with any other narrator.

Somehow Moria Quirk makes Tamsyn Muir’s stories even better

Although it doesn’t seem possible, Moira Quirk adds another level of nuance, heart and humour to Tamsyn’s stories. I couldn’t think of a better person to voice these characters or bring them to life in this way.
