Summary

Meet the Dobsons and the Jamiesons: two ordinary families on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Joe Dobson left his wife and kids when his young girlfriend, Nina, discovered she was pregnant. Now he feels like a cliche and Nina feels like a drudge, swapping her wild nights out with friends for mild nights in wiping baby sick off the carpet. So when Joe announces that he's booked a week's luxury holiday in Italy, Nina is thrilled - until she realises Joe's kids, Saul and Tabitha, are coming along for the ride.

Meanwhile Guy Jamieson is sure this will be his last family holiday; he plans to leave his wife, Alice, on his return. Guy is a high-powered advertising director and Alice - with her elasticated skirts, inedible mince suppers and unshaven legs - just doesn't fit his image. But Alice has a secret plan of her own: to have another baby....

Funny, smart and refreshingly honest, Having a Lovely Time is all about infidelity, jealousy, resentment, recriminations and, just occasionally, love - from the Sunday Times best-selling author Jenny Eclair.

Not my usual type of book

Must admit I do like a bit of Jenny Eclair. I love her stand up and follow her on Twitter. But I don’t usually read these sorts of books, I like a good serial killer/police type thing. I went for this based on reviews and and Jenny narrating.

So so glad I did. It was funny and touching and interesting and the time flew reading it.

Think twice!

There were parts of this book that were humorous , but unfortunately these were overshadowed by the excessive use of foul language.
It was read far too quickly making it difficult to follow. Otherwise it was ok, but I wouldn’t recommend it based on these points.

Absolutely loved this book

Jenny Eclair never fails to disappoint and this is in my top three. I rarely read a book more than once but I've read this three times. It is wonderful and beautifully narrated by Jenny herself.

Well written boring diatribe

I cannot fault the standard of writing but the narrator lacks emotion & the story so predictable & boring

Bittersweet chocolate Eclair

I do like Jenny Eclair, so that is what drew me to this book.

I knew I was not going to get a fine novel, saga or perfect prose. However she has written and narrated a great chick lit that is my guilty enjoyable secret.

Don’t get me wrong I am not a book snob only reading the classics etc, but every now and again it is nice to immerse yourself in something that is easy, funny and definitely not to taxing for the brain.

Really dated and annoying characters

I like Jenny Eclair I really do. But all the characters in this book were really annoying. The men were awful misogynists. The women were just awful. Why any of them stayed with any of them was a mystery to me. In fact, I got so muddled up between them all because I didn't care what happened to any of them. Jenny lost another star for her appalling baby impersonations. Who wants to hear a middle-aged woman screaming like a baby? NOT ME!

Like it

It is good and I love that Jenny is reading it but the ending is a slight let down and you don’t find out what happens to some characters

Hillarious

Fabulously enjoyable. Just like the end of a holiday I was sad when it was over.
