About this listen

At the request of Her Majesty's government, private enquiry agent Cyrus Barker agrees to take on his least favorite kind of assignment - he's to provide security for a secret conference with the French government. The conference is to take place on the private estate of Lord Hargrave on a remote island off the coast of Cornwall. The goal of the conference is the negotiation of a new treaty with France. The cover story for the gathering is a house party - an attempt to introduce Lord Hargrave's two unmarried sons to potential mates.

But shortly after the parties land at the island, Lord Hargrave is killed by a sniper shot, and the French ambassador's head of security is found stabbed to death. The only means of egress from the island - a boat - has been sent away, and the means of signaling for help has been destroyed. Trapped in a manor house with no way of escape, Cyrus Barker and his assistant, Thomas Llewelyn, must uncover which among them is the killer before the next victim falls.

Critic reviews

"Thomas supplies plenty of suspects and red herrings, ratcheting up the tension steadily as he winnows the targets to make this period adventure one of his best." ( Kirkus)

Another good story of Barker and Llewelyn

This time they are on an island, a bit Agatha Christie but thoroughly enjoyable and I would recommend this series I’m really enjoying them !

Captivating

Thought all the characters were well written and thought out, plot twists, and suspicion throughout. Another great Barker Llewelyn adventure

Blood bath.

I have been listening to the series one after the other and this is the weakest as far as I am concerned. It is an absolute blood bath and frankly I don't think it fits in well with the characters previous story lines. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy listening to it, the narrator is a joy to listen too as always I just think this story is lacking in the something from the previous ones.

Not sure if a parody or not

Barker is sold as the world's greatest enquiry agent - detective. Yet he and his assistant appear to be the most bumbling incompetence around. This starts off like a traditional Agatha Christie novel but unlike those novels I suspect everyone who is listening has identified the killer half way through but the detectives need it spelt out to them by the killer.
