Summary
A captivating historical murder mystery set in Victorian England. The Malvern Murders is packed with delicious dialogue, sly humour and Victorian atmosphere. Perfect for fans of M.R.C. Kasasian, E.S. Thomson, Oscar De Muriel and Karen Charlton.
Before Jack the Ripper terrorised London, Police Inspector Samuel Ravenscroft patrolled the streets of Whitechapel. Clever and hard-working, Ravenscroft nonetheless has the worst record in the force. He lets a murderer escape during a chase and is banished to the spa town of Malvern for a water treatment to cure his asthma. Ravenscroft accepts a dinner invitation from a new acquaintance, Jabez Pitzer. Before dinner, the maid finds Pitzer slumped over his desk - dead. Ravenscroft immediately recognises the signs - Pitzer has been poisoned. But the local authorities are reluctant to believe there is a murderer in Malvern. Hungry to prove himself, Ravenscroft is determined to solve the case. But the bodies mount up. Someone is killing local luminaries.

Really enjoyed this book!
Really enjoyed this book, the plot was interesting and kept me wanting to keep listening.
I don’t agree with the other persons review, there was no letching in my opinion! But that’s the point, we all have differing opinions on books.
The narrator was superb and really bought the characters to life!
Have immediately downloaded the next book and really looking forward to see if it was as enjoyable as the first :-)

A bit trite
My problem with this book was that i didn’t really like the main character. He’s frankly a lecher and seems to throw himself into the life of another character with not much encouragement and while on duty. The plot hinge was a bit trite and this all felt very old fashioned in its writing and outlook.

OK. more MC Beaton than MRC Kasasian
this book is OK. it's not amazing. the publisher's comparisons to mrc kasasian are stretching things a bit, this is very basic in comparison, and I'm surprised by so many great reviews of this. a little more work on character development may have helped, the central protagonist is a bit bland. the story itself was alright. I wouldn't describe it as captivating, it pootles along nicely in manner of an mc Beaton novel rather than demonstrating the pace, character depth and complexity of world building of Kasasian or the detail of Muriel. It was good enough to consider the next in the series, but maybe for a "switch off the mind" read rather than an engaging/exciting read.

Surprised by other reviews
I purchased this as it was recommended by audible for listeners who have enjoyed the De Muriel series of books. I also read the reviews and it had received many good ones. However, the story is so formatted, there’s a sudden love angle that just seemed dropped in - and had no lead up to and the sudden realisations by the lead detective of things that were glaringly obvious to the listener was ridiculous. I can’t count how many times I said “duh” as I listened. Very disappointing and I won’t be spending money on the rest of the series.

A very enjoyable listen
I enjoy books set in Victorian England and this didn't disappoint. The main character - the police detective - is interesting and the story benefitted from a good variety of other characters to support the story. I have gone on to read several more of the books in the series on Kindle.
