About this listen

From the internationally best-selling author of the Artemis Fowl series: Eoin Colfer's first adult fantasy novel is a hilarious, high-octane adventure about a vodka-drinking, Flashdance-loving dragon who's been hiding out from the world - and potential torch-carrying mobs - in a Louisiana bayou...until his peaceful world's turned upside down by a well-intentioned but wild Cajun tearaway and the crooked (and heavily armed) law officer who wants him dead.

Squib Moreau may be swamp-wild, but his intentions are (generally) good: he really wants to be a supportive son to his hard-working momma Elodie. But sometimes life gets in the way - like when Fake Daddy walked out on them leaving a ton of debt, or when crooked Constable Regence Hooke got to thinking pretty Elodie Moreau was just the gal for him....

An apprenticeship with the local moonshine runner, servicing the bayou, looks like the only way to pay off the family debts and maybe get Squib and his momma a place in town, far from Constable Hooke's unwanted courtship and Fake Daddy's reputation.

Unfortunately for Squib, Hooke has his own eye on that very same stretch of bayou - and neither of them have taken into account the fire-breathing dragon hiding out in the Louisiana swamp...

For Squib Moreau, Regence Hooke and Vern, aka Lord Highfire of Highfire Eyrie, life is never going to be the same again.

Highfire: A triumphant genre-bending tour de force of comedy and action by the million-copy-selling master storyteller.

Interesting story, narration accent a bit annoying

Took a while to get going and then ended somewhat abruptly. Overall good book though

unique and comical surprise!

I grew up reading the authors Artemis Fowl series, so I was excited to come across this book. However, it REALLY wasn't what I expected, but in a great way! it is such a completely unique and comical tale that the narrator presented perfectly!

Great story

Really like the story. Lots of swearing. Did find narration hard to follow at times as character voices too alike.

Rollicking Deep Fried Fun

I really enjoyed this. Absolute bollocks of the highest order, with an cracking pace, brilliant setting, excellent (anti) hero and loveable rogue protagonist, all topped off for good measure with a grade-a proper bastard for a baddie. Great stuff.

Funny and unique

Narration is on point throughout and makes this book an excellent shorter listen.

The story is fantastic and small, a bit slow at the start but after that is excellent until the end.

Delightful

What a delightful tale. Funny, hysterical in places, suspenseful in others, just a well-rounded story.

Phenomal book!

I listen to a LOT of audible books. A LOT. I also read a lot of books as well. This blew me away! I’m devastated it’s finished.
Everything about this audible book ticks the right boxes.
1. Humour - yes it’s very funny
2. Originality- absolutely
3. Narrator- perfect!
4. Characters - wonderful

For those complaining about the swearing in the book it’s worth reminding everyone that it is an ADULT book. If you have never been to New Orleans or the Bayou then firstly - get going it’s incredible - secondly the language used was absolutely on point! Awesome, for me like being back in NO during Mardi Gras or on a hot summer evening. I very much felt taken back to the Bayou.
The narrator is perfect - see above - accent and delivery perfect.

Finally if you don’t like adult humour - it’s not for you. This isn’t Artemis Fowl, and the readership isn’t supposed to be 13 years old. If you like humorous fantasy and appreciate that the world isn’t censored from colourful language then get yourself a listen of this.

Please Eoin- please write some more!!

hard to get into, but a solid story once you do

I found it initially a bit confusing to follow and so was a bit disengaged, but as it progressed I found I enjoyed it more and more.
