Summary
Glory arrives back in Peckham, from her seemingly glamorous life in LA, to mourn the sudden death of her father and finds her previously close family has fallen apart in her absence. Her brother, Victor, has been jailed, her sister, Faith, appears to have lost her independence and ambition and their mother, Celeste, is headed towards a breakdown. Glory is thrown by their disarray, and rather than returning to America, she decides to stay and try to bring them all together again. However, when she unearths a huge family secret, Glory risks losing everyone she truly cares about in her pursuit of the truth.
Hope and Glory is a rich, heart-warming story of loss, love and family chaos and marks an exciting new voice in fiction.
Critic reviews
"A sweeping, rich tale that explores family, secrets, loss, love and redemption within the context of a tessellation of cultures - written with a beautiful texture, Benson pulls you in to a deftly woven story with tautly written sentences, and before you know it you find yourself in too deep to get out, too deep to want to get out, wanting to know more." (Bolu Babalola, author of Love in Colour)
"Jendella Benson has drawn such a compelling world that Hope and Glory, the book and the characters themselves, stayed with me long after I'd turned the final pages." (Candice Carty-Williams, author of Queenie)
"So deliciously South London." (Yomi Adegoke, author of Slay in Your Lane)

Characters are realistic, flawed and likeable. Great pronunciation of words from the narrator and great easy to read novel. Really enjoyed.

Very enjoyable
I loved this book!
I’ve read articles by the author in Black Ballard, so was already familiar with her style.
The book was feel good, interesting and analytical at the same time.
Can’t wait for the next novel!

authentic story brilliantly told
A great look into the dynamics between the first generation African diaspora born in the west and the generation they're directly descended from.
This is a full story painting a clear picture of the protagonist and all her flaws in all her glory.
It's at times an emotional tale but is fully captivating and a great read for someone trying to understand the culture with all its quirks.

Captivating from start to finish.
This book was a very enjoyable read. The author was accurate in her writing and clearly did a lot of research. The reader did an excellent job in my opinion and brought the book to life. A highly recommended read.

Relatable in many many ways.
Beautifully written and beautifully read. The story of an immigrant family with all its complexities is all too familiar.
I recommend.

Engaging story, love the narrator!
A lively and engaging story wonderfully read by the amazing Kelechi! 👏🏾
I loved hearing about the experiences and home life of the British-born Nigerian characters as I could really relate and found lots of similarities to my own upbringing in a Ghanaian household.
I liked that the story had a positive and yet open end to it. A really easy listen and I completed it in a day and a half. Recommended!
