About this listen

In a post-apocalyptic ice age, neomage Thorn St. Croix was nearly driven insane by her powers. She lived as a fugitive, disguised as a human, channeling her gifts for war into stone-magery. When she was discovered, her friends and neighbors accepted her, but warily.

Not so the mage who arrives from the Council of Seraphs, who could be her greatest ally or her most dangerous foe. And when her long-gone sister, Rose, is revealed to still be alive, Thorn must make a choice - and risk her own life in the process.

It’s OK, but not Yellowrock good

I’m a big fan of the Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter and had hoped that this smaller series was of the same standard. Unfortunately, I have to conclude that it precedes the series by some time.

There are some here that show up, more evolved, more polished, in the Yellowrock books. Where Jane has a personality and some humour, Thorn is boring and honestly not that bright, She’s hard to root for, when what I’d really like is to drop-kick her out of the book and find a better protagonist to carry it.

But let’s also talk about the narration, because I have honestly been spoilt by the talent of Kristine Hvam, who narrates the Yellowrock series so well. Sure, Hvam mangles French atrociously when it comes to pronunciation, but she at least does well with the English language, whereas this narrator jars with her mispronunciation of fairly commonplace words.

In all, I’m glad I finished the series for the sake of completing it. But also very pleased never to have to revisit it again.
