About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Two-time championship-winning and record-breaking racing driver Jason Plato is a living, breathing example of what you shouldn't do if you want to become a professional racing driver:
Do not:
- Almost kill Bernie Ecclestone
- Give Prince Charles the finger on the M42
- Choose fags and booze over the gym
- Steal a JCB in Monaco and end up in prison there - twice
- Make enemies with a 6' 6" rival who is a black belt in everything.
Since joining the Williams Touring Car team in 1997 it's no coincidence that he has had more race wins than Lewis Hamilton and Stirling Moss, competed in more races than Jenson Button and set the largest number of fastest laps ever. But it's also no coincidence that he once spent several days in prison in Monaco for stealing a JCB. He's a rule breaker who has had more than his fair share of near-death experiences, drunken escapades and more. Yet he's still racing.
There is nothing sensible, predictable or considered about Jason, but this is how he became a racing legend.

excellent Mr Plato
I have a pretty big audible library. I send back books I don't want to listen to for a second time. it's like a great movie. I've seen pulp fiction lots and lots of times.
if the author decides to read their own biography. It's usually a let down. Stephen Hendry was bloody awful.
anyhow. Plato is perfect.
funny
engaging
gripping (!)
longer would have been better

JP what a journey
Didn't know what to expect but... The open admissions in his own words especially the JCB and hijacking and then stickers on a plane..... And how the touring car skirmish has been explained to date and his origins a very enjoyable journey of his life. Enjoyed every minute and made more so by his narrative

git or twit? you decide...but to me he's both
having listened to other books from F1 drivers, and the like, I listened to this on a long car trip from Scotland to England...and I've never last my head off so much. Is he a rogue? Absolutely. Was he ever the best driver? Probably not but he did his best. Entertaining? He's No.1

Jason Plato nearly made me crash!
I’ve listened to a lot of racing driver and motor racing related audiobooks lately and some of them contain some pretty wild and raucous stories, not least those about Kimi Raikkonen or pit crews, etc, as you might expect, however they all seem so tame when you hear the stories from Mr Plato in this book!
WARNING: Do not listen to this audiobook whilst driving or operating machinery! I did and nearly crashed at least twice as I was laughing so hard, also difficult to see when you have tears streaming from your eyes as a result of some hysterically funny story. Totally brilliant. Even if you have no interest in motor racing or Jason Plato you should still listen to this book, it is seriously entertaining. In an era when many sports people have become very ‘corporate’, here is a real character with some amazing stories which also expose some of those ‘corporate’ characters in the world of motorsport as the complete nutters they really are when the cameras are not on them. You may be surprised! Very, very funny!
I’m sure there are plenty more stories in Jason’s vault and I look forward to the sequel... ;)
