Summary

An Amazon Charts bestseller.

What would it take to make you intervene?

When Ella Longfield overhears two attractive young men flirting with teenage girls on a train, she thinks nothing of it - until she realises they are fresh out of prison and her maternal instinct is put on high alert. But just as she’s decided to call for help, something stops her. The next day, she wakes up to the news that one of the girls - beautiful, green-eyed Anna Ballard - has disappeared.

A year later, Anna is still missing. Ella is wracked with guilt over what she failed to do, and she’s not the only one who can’t forget. Someone is sending her threatening letters - letters that make her fear for her life.

Then an anniversary appeal reveals that Anna’s friends and family might have something to hide. Anna’s best friend, Sarah, hasn’t been telling the whole truth about what really happened that night - and her parents have been keeping secrets of their own.

Someone knows where Anna is - and they’re not telling. But they are watching Ella.

A Glowing Five Stars

Wow, I take my hat off to the author for this book, it was simply unputdownable. A tragic tale of a missing teenager which will have you asking yourself what you would have done had you been in Ella's shoes. I listened on audio and found myself prolonging my household chores just to listen to one more chapter, and driving a little slower when it played in the car. It's the sense of intrigue that carries this novel along nicely, the need to hear just another chapter to find out what happens next. There are several families involved with various characters and Teresa writes with such authenticity that you can see the story play out in your mind's eye. Unlike some books, you're never left wondering who a particular character is for very long as the author explains it very clearly. Everyone has secrets - which I loved. My sense of curiosity was on overdrive and the ending was brilliant, all the loose ends tied together beautifully without seeming rushed. It's easy to see why this book has been such a huge hit with readers and I look forward to her next offering, The Friend. Also, a note for the narrator. I am a huge fan of Elizabeth Knowelden and she did an amazing job of bringing this audiobook to life. A glowing five stars from me.

Very repetative

I struggled with this book, and found the twists and turns an anti climax. The story is told from different character points of view, with each one telling the same story over and over again. You can tell the author was trying to build tension, but I just found it frustrating. Each time a character would divulge something or get to the point, something would happen to stop them. They'd go over the same feelings and again and again and I felt like it didn't add to the story rather dragged it on for a few more hours. The ending was a little surprising, but by then I just wanted the story to be finished. Character development was good, but I found the main character "the witness" a bit wet and she annoyed me. Not for me at all, but the narration was good and the story did have potential, just too repetitive for me to enjoy.

Wonderful from start to finish.

An interesting and clever plot. Not overcomplicated or ridiculous. Brilliant characters. Recommended fully without hesitation.

Page turner!

Full of twists and turns, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Well narrated and constructed, it’s never too predictable. The characters are believable for the most part, though there was a small glitch where three different characters all use the same phrase “done a bunk”. However that was the only annoyance (and yes I realise it’s tiny) for me. Overall I’d definitely recommend.

Why was it not perfect?

The premise was a good one, but the telling of the story lacked tightness. There was hardly any need to have a blow by blow account of the detective's domestic situation, the dog's behavior, and other pointless descriptions. Far too many small observations that added nothing to the story.
Sloppy writing... "Done a bunk" said by various characters, and the expression "from the off" repeated countless times again by every character. How many times did we have to hear the daughter say "You disgust me" to her dad?

The reader has received many accolades in the reviews but I found her voice too breathless and slightly hysterical as a way of blowing drama into the narrative, even in places where it was definitely not called for.
She lacked that amazing skill some readers have to differentiate characters, in voice, accent and tonality.
Having said all this, I thought it was a fairly well thought out thriller. Congratulation. It has obviously done well.

Poor title for a good book

I really did not like the title of this book, it just reminded me of the usual hyped up psychological thriller with all the promises and little to deliver once you are sucked in.

However, I am pleased thati did not judge the book by its cover and went on to read the synopsis, which looked as though it had some potential.

Now I am pleased I bought, listened and written this review as it was really good. There were lots of twists and turns and all surrounding believable characters which isessential for a story to prove it’s worth.

Thank you Ms Driscoll, I will see what else you have to offer.

A Brilliant, Well-written, Story

A terrific listen from beginning to end. The story was completely unpredictable, imaginative, and the characters carefully constructed. I really loved it and will definitely seek out other books by the same author (if there are any) or wait for them with anticipation.

I didn't think the marketing of the book was good and I passed over it a few times before buying it. I found the title a bit trite and the sample audio clip a little dull.

Average

This book started well and I was intrigued. however it seemed to lose momentum quite quickly and I lost track of names and who was who. The narrator was okay and I got to the end but was a very forgettable story.
