Ten years ago, a boy named Samuel Murray went missing from the quiet village of Buckthorpe and was never seen again. Rosie Sharpe cried over her missing friend for weeks after. But her little sister, Heather, knows that Rosie’s tears hide the truth. Seven years ago, six-year-old Maisie Earnshaw was found facedown in a duck pond, her body mutilated. Isabel - at age 14, found covered in Maisie's blood - was convicted of murder. As Leah spends time with Isabel, she comes to know her as a young woman with a sweet, gentle nature, someone she could never see as a murderer. Leah begins to suspect members of the Fielding family of framing Isabel as a young girl, and she's not the only one. True crime blogger James Gorden thinks Isabel is innocent, too.

Story
Women are rarely cold-blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution. The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

A superb short story
Really enjoyed, and like her Silent Child novel, the story flow was engaging. This might sound like a criticism but truly isn't meant as such, wish I'd listened before I heard Silent Child, which had more depth. If you enjoyed Silent Child, you'll like this, If you haven't got round to silent Child perhaps hear this first.

In Silent Child's Shadow
In an attempt to build on the success of the highly-publicised Silent Child Audible have quickly moved to release one of Sarah Denzil's earlier novels with Saving April. It is an enjoyable enough listen and Sophie McShera does a really decent job of injecting life into it.
If you want more of Sarah Denzil then it is worth a shot. You'll get a tidy domestic drama albeit one populated by rather weak characters and with a key twist that I think most people will have guessed well before the end. However, it is overshadowed in every way by Silent Child which is a significantly bigger and better book.

decent quick listen
interesting enough story with good writing and great performance. it's a shorter story and it benefits from not being stretched further than it is. characters are believable and although you know something is wrong you can't quite put your finger on everything straight away.
the story has enough freshness to it, that even though Hannah's backstory seems overly familiar as a plot device (questionable, traumatised, drunk witness) you don't feel bored by the overall book.
would definitely read other books by the author. slightly reminds me of works by Mary Higgins Clark - a shorter thriller, somewhat familiar but yet unique enough to make for a great book

Lovely Northern narration. Good story.
I couldn't fault Sophie McShera's narrating. It was lovely to hear the good old northern accent by a genuine northener in an audiobook.
The story was good but not as 'twisty and turny' as I expected so I felt a little let-down when I noticed there was only 57 minutes to go and realised there wasn't much time left for anything else to happen.
Nevertheless it was still a good story to listen to with a very gasp-worthy final few seconds...

Gripping!!
This is the 2nd audiobook I listen to with a gripping story written by Sarah Denzil. Sophie McShera (known as Daisy from "Downton Abbey") did an excellent job narrating. I spent a good portion trying to figure things out. I don't mean that negatively. It becomes apparent early on that these women have secrets! I found myself feeling compassion for certain characters and then anger towards other characters. And then, what I love about any good book, just when I thought I had everyone and everything figured out......I discover that I was wrong! Who doesn't love a good book with an unexpected twist?!

Not Great
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Very dragging and kind of boring. I began to hear blah blah blah. Maybe more characters would have helped. End kind of predictable.
Would you ever listen to anything by Sarah A. Denzil again?
I have. Better.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Sophie McShera?
Yes
What character would you cut from Saving April?
Nosy neighbor

Not a Great Story
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
After listening to The Silent Child I was looking forward to Saving April. What a disappointment. It wasn't as exciting, or even as interesting. It was pretty easy to figure out the plot and to guess what the ending was going to be.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I'm not the writer. I was going by the other book she had written and expected the same enjoyable suspense and surprises.
Did Saving April inspire you to do anything?
Not to read any more of the author's books

Page turner!
This book is totally binge worthy! I bought both kindle and audible versions but ended up listening to the whole book in one night. I loved Denzils book The Silent Child and it was so great. JoAnne Frogatt narrated that one so well. If you haven’t read that one and you liked this you would love Child. Denzil has an amazing gift at drawing the reader in from the first words. You get a kind on foreboding even though it starts off rather innocuous. The only drawback was the narrator didn’t differentiate between voices of characters. And if she did it was so minor that I couldn’t tell. It made it difficult to follow the story initially. You are in three women characters head, the main character a near agoraphobic Hannah, new neighbors mom Laura and daughter April. I was really confused at first because she would just go straight into the other characters without any change. I had to go back a few times and relisten. But other than that it was great 👍🏻

Better pacing than Woman in the Window
A lot of the plot of the blockbuster "The Woman in the Window" seems to have been heavily borrowed from this novel. Having listened to both, I can say that I found this one to be a better paced story. Neither is going to win the Booker prize for literary fiction but this one grabbed me right away and kept me interested.
