Summary

A gloriously witty novel from Sebastian Faulks using P.G. Wodehouse’s much-loved characters, Jeeves and Wooster, fully authorised by the Wodehouse estate.

Bertie Wooster, recently returned from a very pleasurable soujourn in Cannes, finds himself at the stately home of Sir Henry Hackwood in Dorset. Bertie is more than familiar with the country house set-up: he is a veteran of the cocktail hour and, thanks to Jeeves, his gentleman's personal gentleman, is never less than immaculately dressed. On this occasion, however, it is Jeeves who is to be seen in the drawing room while Bertie finds himself below stairs - and he doesn't care for it at all.

Love, as so often, is at the root of the confusion. Bertie, you see, has met Georgiana on the Côte d'Azur. And though she is clever and he has a reputation for foolish engagements, it looks as though this could be the real thing. However, Georgiana is the ward of Sir Henry Hackwood and, in order to maintain his beloved Melbury Hall, the impoverished Sir Henry has struck a deal that would see Georgiana becoming Mrs Rupert Venables. Meanwhile, Peregrine ‘Woody' Beeching, one of Bertie's oldest chums, is desperate to regain the trust of his fiancée Amelia, Sir Henry's tennis-mad daughter. But why would this necessitate Bertie having to pass himself off as a servant when he has never so much as made a cup of tea?

Could it be that the ever-loyal, Spinoza-loving Jeeves has an ulterior motive? Evoking the sunlit days of a time gone by, Jeeves and the Wedding Bells is a delightfully witty story of mistaken identity, a midsummer village festival, a cricket match and love triumphant.

Excellent Jeeves homage

I have both read and listened to the book. It is a typical P G Wodehouse plot. Lots of the usual humour with some background information to set it in time which is interesting. Read very well narrated. Highly recommended if you are a fan of Wodehouse.

Well worth a listen

Julian Rhind-Tutt is an excellent narrator. I enjoyed his performances on the new series of Poirot novels by Sophie Hannah and he's just as engaging here.

Joyful

Like others, I wondered whether this would be a pleasure or a disaster. I have loved every minute of listening. The writing is every bit as good as PGW and the reading has been excellent causing me to laugh out loud many times. Well done to both writer and reader.

Absolutely, what's the word, tip of my...

Oh yes, that's it, marvellous! Nicely done Mr Faulks. Good zippy plot, plenty of twists and turns, and the Jeeves machinations to bring things to a "most satisfactory" conclusion were brilliantly thought out.

Woodhousian

I am a Woodhouse fan.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - it is novel, not an imitation, and blends into the works.
It is very well narrated.

Excellent!

I loved this story but this narrator's voice is not good enough for this author!

Jeeves and Bertie Live on

Style, plot and character detail, with the essential feature of fitting names, are a delight and continue the pleasure into almost convincing matrimony.

An absolute zinger!

I absolutely adored this one. Bertie at his zippiest and Jeeves at his most Machiavellian.

Julian Rhind-Tutt gives a marvellous performance of both with gusto.

The only thing I would like more would be for Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry to dust off the grey flannels and spats and make this into a feature film.

Highly entertaining! great fun - Julian R-T an excellent narrator. Has a little more introspection and context than the usual PGWs - which I enjoyed very much
