About this listen

From award-winning actor and comedian Paul Scheer, a candid and hilarious memoir-in-essays on coming to terms with childhood trauma and finding the joy in embracing your authentic self, featuring content exclusive to the audio edition, including excerpts from live shows and audio clips from home movies.

Paul Scheer has entertained countless fans and podcast listeners with stories about the odd, wild, and absurd details of his life. Yet these tales have pointed to deeper, more difficult truths that the actor and comedian has kept to himself. Now, he is finally ready to share those truths for the first time—but, of course, with a healthy dose of humor.

Blending the confident, affable voice that has won him a dedicated following with a refreshing level of candor, Joyful Recollections of Trauma chronicles Paul’s often shocking, admittedly tumultuous childhood and how the experiences of his youth have reverberated throughout his life. In his comedy, Paul has always been unafraid to “go there,” to play naïve, cringeworthy characters, imbuing them with disarming charm and humanity. That daring openness is on display in this memoir, but in true Paul fashion, it is also surprising, eye-opening, and side-splitting.

In this madcap journey through the inner working of his mind and creative process, Paul Scheer demonstrates once again that the truth is often stranger—and funnier—than fiction. Joyful Recollections of Trauma offers a unique perspective on universal themes: growing up, working through a challenging childhood, staying true to yourself, and finding success, fulfillment, and happiness in often strange and difficult circumstances. Throughout, Paul shares both the hard-fought lessons and the laughter that can be found in the darkest parts of life, and reminds us that what matters is not what you’ve been through but who you are becoming. If you loved recent memoirs by Molly Shannon, Maria Bamford, RuPaul, and Jennette McCurdy—or any book that moves you to both laughter and tears—Joyful Recollections of Trauma is the perfect listen for you.

One I’d rather have read than listened to

A fascinating story, but Scheer grates after time. Buy the book, not the audible version.

The title is perfect

It is not often a title to a book is so apt. This book tells some pretty horrific tales but does it with such lightness that you are more often laughing than crying.

Made me laugh and cry

As a fan of HDTGM I was excited to listen to Paul’s audiobook. It didn’t disappoint and at times it had me laughing out loud and at others crying for the little boy he once was, brilliantly written and read. It was a joy to listen to.

Deeper than I expected, but still hilarious

Was a huge fan of How Did This Get Made, pre ordered this and got a signed postcard from “Tall John” himself. Not only do you get Paul’s book in this audiobook, you also get the relevant stories from how did this get made and some exclusive bits like Q and As from the HDTGM audience.

As for this book, it tells some really hilarious and some really personal stories. It is peppered with really funny anecdotes throughout, but also deals with physical and emotional abuse. What is really heartwarming is Paul talking through how he has addressed and worked through this trauma so that he doesn’t pass it on to his own children. I shipped Paul and June through the podcast, but seeing the depth of their bond through this book warms my heart.

Overall, this gave me everything I wanted as a fan of the show and a lot more. If you’re a fan of the show, then you will love this. If you’re not, this is still a worthwhile book that will act as a first hit to get you addicted to hundreds of hours of a great podcast.

Geostorm!

Hilariously Poignant… 5 stars!

Raw, sweet, sad, joyful, honest, entertaining, heartbreaking… beautifully told. I tore through it and couldn’t wait to be driving so I could continue it.

Paul is a great storyteller, his life story was something I couldn't stop listening to - I laughed, I cried, I related - such a well written account.

Funny, moving and brilliantly performed

Based on my superficial understanding of his career and persona, I was surprised at how much trauma there has been in Paul Scheer's life, but this book lives up to the title and the good times and bad times are joyfully and positively discussed. This was funny and brilliantly performed - audiobooks aren't my default format, but after listening to the HDTGM podcast I knew I wanted to hear this book read by the man himself and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
