About this listen

At a costume party with the dubious theme of 'famous murderers and their victims', the know-it-all amateur criminologist Roger Sheringham is settled in for an evening of beer, small talk and analysing his companions.

One guest in particular has caught his attention for her theatrics, and his theory that she might have several enemies among the partygoers proves true when she is found hanging from the 'decorative' gallows on the roof terrace. Noticing a key detail which could implicate a friend in the crime, Sheringham decides to meddle with the scene and unwittingly casts himself into jeopardy as the uncommonly thorough police investigation circles closer and closer to the truth.

Tightly paced and cleverly defying the conventions of the classic detective story, this 1933 novel remains a milestone of the inverted mystery subgenre.

Very original

Not your usual cozy whodunnit. This book is absolutely brilliant and completely unexpected. Please record more of his books.

Blackly comic goings on.

a very surprising, refreshingly unprincipled tale of fancy dress antics, panicking sleuths and a monomaniac spouse getting it literally in the neck.

Well written, and equally well read.

A very amusing and cleverly written story, although perhaps a tad lacking in empathy for today’s audience. Seán Barrett is an excellent narrator. He doesn’t overdo the women’s voices, and his Scottish accent is perfect. Very clear and expressive. I hope that he will narrate more Roger Sherringham novels.

How is this book not more famous?

This is my new favourite crime classic, and I've consumed a LOT. and I really do mean a LOT. I love all the Agatha Christies but this is a cut above most of her works. It had me right till the very end, and everyone who likes a good whodunit will enjoy the twists, turns, and above all the subversions of the genre at which Berkeley is a true master. And the narration is also some of the best I've ever heard! I want more, please!

Good fun.

Twisty, tricky, funny. Black humour and witty dialogue. Preposterous story, of course.
First rate narration from Sean Barrett.

Monotone narration

The story must be one of Berkeley’s earlier ones as the idea is quite good, a bit chaotic here and there, but still interesting. Unfortunately, it’s spoiled by a monotone narrator who is either unfamiliar with the text or lacks experience in bringing it to life ( all voices are the same, there’s no change in tempo or intonation). Very disappointing.
