About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Just Great Teaching written and read by Ross Morrison McGill.

'Bursting with fresh ideas, packed with practical tips, filled with wise words, this is an inspiring guide for all teachers.' Lee Elliot Major, Professor of Social Mobility, University of Exeter and co-author of What Works?

50 tried-and-tested practical ideas to help you tackle the top ten issues in your classroom.

Ross Morrison McGill, bestselling author of Mark. Plan. Teach. and Teacher Toolkit, pinpoints the top ten key issues that schools in Great Britain are facing today, and provides strategies, ideas and techniques for how these issues can be tackled most effectively.

We often talk about the challenges of teacher recruitment and retention, about new initiatives and political landscapes, but day in, day out, teachers and schools are delivering exceptional teaching and most of it is invisible. Ross uncovers, celebrates, and analyses best practice in teaching.

Supported by case studies and research undertaken by Ross in ten primary and secondary schools across Britain, including a pupil referral unit and private, state and grammar schools, as well as explanations from influential educationalists as to why and how these ideas work, Ross explores the issues of marking and assessment, planning, teaching and learning, teacher wellbeing, student mental health, behaviour and exclusions, SEND, curriculum, research-led practice and CPD.

With a foreword by Lord Jim Knight and contributions from Priya Lakhani, Andria Zafirakou, Mark Martin, Professor Andy Hargreaves and many more, this book inspires listeners to open their eyes to how particular problems can be resolved and how other schools are already doing this effectively. It is packed with ideas and advice for all primary and secondary classroom teachers and school leaders keen to provide the best education they possibly can for our young people today.

Brilliant book

Fantastic book that I would buy for all my staff if the budget allowed. The performance is terrible though. Ross has a terrible voice that makes this difficult to listen to. I can't believe his team allowed him to read it himself. Flat and nerdy, extremely grating. Brilliant content though and I bought the hard copy too.

Excellent book however . . .

Must read for any educator. Physical book would allow review of specific sections when desired.

Just the book I needed for my NQT year

Ross' take on the challenges and solutions facing the education sector is refreshing and honest!
I really appreciated hearing the importance of teaching well-being placed alongside the needs of high quality teaching. I hope the ideas in this book around work load reduction continue so we can focus on what's most important which is the students in front of you.

invaluable for this trainee teacher, and the scientist in me appreciates how thoroughly researched and referenced it is. Ross is a titan of teaching and all teachers should follow his work

As the title suggests. ..

Great ideas - practical case studies included. A well-structured nook which makes it easy to dip into.

School Leaderships' Friend

The book covers a lot of ground; the breadth of coverage comes with plenty of practical, low-cost-high-impact suggestions, grounded in contemporary pedagogical research.
It's great, and I'll be listening another one or two times to catalogue specific things I want to try out or research further.

The tone is sympathetic to teachers, but doesn't shy from the responsibilities of everyone, individually and institutionally.

It has helped me to reflect on my career to-date: reminding me of frankly embarrassing initiatives, but also helping me appreciate for the first time some of the better (in intention if not execution) initiatives. I feel both proud of our profession and motivated to improve.

This book is honest, practical, well researched and highly recommended.

Sorry but no

1) It's like that guy at the pub that's read one article and is now an expert... Come on, if you work in a school then you know everything within this book already.

2) Ross's voice is like jamming your head in a blender.

I will update this review when I've finished listening but the Pritti Patel style narration is driving me crazy.
