Summary

From fan-favorite Scarlett St. Clair, the bestselling author of the Hades & Persephone series, comes a new fantasy filled with danger, darkness, and insatiable romance.

Their union is his revenge.

Isolde de Lara considers her wedding day to be her death day. To end a years-long war, she is to marry vampire king Adrian Aleksandr Vasiliev, and kill him.

But her assassination attempt is thwarted, and Adrian threatens that if Isolde tries to kill him again, he will raise her as the undead. Faced with the possibility of becoming the thing she hates most, Isolde seeks other ways to defy him and survive the brutal vampire court.

Except it isn't the court she fears most—it's Adrian. Despite their undeniable chemistry, she wonders why the king—fierce, savage, merciless—chose her as consort.

The answer will shatter her world.

Contains mature themes.

Hard going

Interesting story line. The male character was interesting but under utilised. The female character was exceptionally annoying and confrontational for the sake of it. I will not be following this story into the next book. It was too much like hard work. Not for me but don’t let that put you off purchasing. It is an interesting and beautiful concept and the new world envisioned is very descriptive and well designed. The lead characters were just not my thing.

Not slow burn

I mean by chapter two she is feeling herself up over the thought of him. I was enjoying it still but it lost me a bit at the red palace. Especially when Adrian literally rips someone’s eye out as they said he’d been distracted by his new wife. I mean come on. What girl really what’s to be married to someone like that. Can you imagine your husband doing that? Getting a bit done with these dark violent immortal over sexed man types that are suddenly fascinated with the MC.

Easy listening

An easy listening story with extra spice. Pretty simple and no real surprises to the twists and turns - but that was just what was needed! Loved Isolde’s voice narrator but Adrian’s in the bonus chapter is not great.

Plot gets lost in… other things

This story could have been a delightful slow burn, but unfortunately the MC falls into the arms of her “enemy” within a few chapters.

The whole book feels lazy and half-baked. The writer seems scared to lean into her lore and storytelling and relies on the *spice* far too much. The whole relationship between Isolde and Adrian feels extremely rushed despite plot elements which are clumsily foreshadowed and ultimately easy to guess. The writer relies on telling the reader that her characters are “monsters” but really nothing they do ever seems very evil.

But it was entertaining and I wouldn’t begrudge it as a free book if it does get added to the library, wouldn’t use a credit on it though.

Absolutely loved this book! Could not stop listening, even when at work!!! I love a good enemies to lovers trope and the writing draws you in straight away!

eh

Performance was nice, but the mmc pov at the end ruined it all for me. I imagined his voice to be like Gandalfs and my dreams were crushed.

Mediocre…

This is a reaaal slow burn. I’ve seen reviews saying people ‘couldnt put it down’ and I cant say I agree.

It was okay but I didnt feel much happened and then lots happened in the two chapters.

In the hades x persephone series the world building and characters were so nuanced. This was just a bit boring…

On the other hand, i’ve seen criticism that this is similar to J L armentrouts series. Yes there are some coincidences but don’t fee they are really that close at all

Narrator was okay. Not as good with voices as some others. Male narrator for bonus was abysmal. Maybe because im British, but the super gravelly, breathy tone is annoying, and makes every sentence sound the same.
