Summary

Stumbling upon a shoot-out, Sara Linton - paediatrician and medical examiner - finds herself entangled in a horrific tragedy. And what seems at first to be a terrible but individual catastrophe proves to have wider implications when the autopsy reveals evidence of long-term abuse and ritualistic self-mutilation.

Sara and Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver start to investigate, but the children surrounding the victim close ranks and the families turn their backs. Then a young girl is abducted, and it becomes clear that the first death is linked to an even more brutal crime. And unless Sara and Jeffrey can uncover the deadly secrets the children are hiding, it's going to happen again....

Great book but let down by narrator

Great book but the narrator is too fast and monotone. I followed a suggestion of slowing it to 80%/90% this really helped.

Good story but awful narrator

The narrator is awful, I had to change the speed settings to get through it. Very monotone, terrible character voices etc. BUT as usual the writing was good on Karin Slaughter’s side. Not her best but worth a listen.

Great story, unexpected

Real page Turner and exciting twists. You get drawn to believe certain characters and then get a real shock when truth comes out. Loved it

Excellent book

I almost didn't bother with this book simply because of all the negative comments on the narrator.
I've read all of these books before and l'm just getting around to listening to them so l thought if l skipped this because of the negative comments it wouldn't matter so much because I know the story.
I spent most of the book waiting for it to be terrible...never happened!
I enjoyed the book and l was perfectly fine with the narration...l have no clue what people are so upset about!!!

Terrible narrator

Good story, terrible narrating. Really difficult to listen to. Which is a shame. Would not recommend for audio but would for reading.

Great story poor narrator

I read all these books many years ago and really enjoyed them so thought I’d revisit them again on audible. The stories are still as great as I remembered but oh the dull voice of the narrator and her poor voices for characters made it a hard listen alas. Such a shame as with a better narrator these audiobooks would be outstanding. But that’s my opinion and others may not mind her voice in which case there’s a really good disturbing yet totally believable story here that makes you feel such sympathy and pure anger at the characters which to me means it’s good storytelling to get me emotionally involved with the characters.

Ugh

The narrator made everyone sound like angsty, uninterested teens. But the book overall was great.

Great story

I loved the storyline but i couldn't help but to think that it was read by Siri or Alexa. I couldn't get used to that.

Chilling story

Karin Slaughter's story draws you in, despite the feeling that you're so uncomfortable with it. The characters are strong and your emotions run high on times. Good can't quite overcome evil because the effects on individuals is horrendous. Apart from some odd voices, the narrator did well. I became distracted for a few chapters when the recording had an echo. Otherwise it was a worthwhile experience.
