Summary

A Horus Heresy: Primarchs novel

Few among the legendary primarchs are as feared as Konrad Curze, the Night Haunter. Even before his fall to darkness, he was a sinister legend, a remorseless killer. This is his story.

Listen to it because:

The Night Haunter is a fascinating character, a man who could have been a hero, but for the daemons that plague him, the result of his nightmarish visions of a future he helps to create. Guy Haley delves into this lord of the night, in a story you'll never forget…

The story:

Of all the Emperor’s immortal sons, the primarchs, it is Konrad Curze whose legend is the darkest. Born in the shadows of Nostramo, a world of murderers, thieves and worse, is it any surprise that he became the figure of dread known only as the Night Haunter? Heed now the tragic story of the creature Konrad Curze, master of the Night Lords Legion, of how he became a monster and a weapon of terror. He who once served the Imperium saw the truth in a maddening universe and the hypocrisy of a loveless father, and embraced the only thing that made any sense - darkness. From the blood-soaked gutters of his hiveworld upbringing, to the last days of his ill-fated existence, Curze is a primarch like no other and his tale is one to chill the very bone....

Sheds new light on the Night Haunter

Amazing performance by Keeble as usual, but it's the story that's the star here. It captures Curzes madness but also gives insight into his motivation. Previously I've loved the legion but hated the Primarch, but this book made me love him as well.

Good but tailed off

My first book on nightlords. It started well but felt it tailed off a bit in the middle.

A relatable phycopath

Listening to this as a massive Night Lord's fan who has listened to the Omnibus twice, it really is a tragedy what befell the legion after listening to the righteousness and justifications that Conrad Kurze has for his actions. Hearing first hand his thoughts on the -spoiler- destruction of Nostramo and the reactions of the legionaries to said destruction was awe inspiring. Loved this book, will be visiting it again for definite!

Surprisingly good

In general I've found black library audio books to be a bit hit or miss for my tastes. You get excellent books such as the Eisenhorn Trilogy and Spear of the Emperor mixed in with average/mediocre books such as Warlord: Fury of the God-Machine and The Beasts Arises series.

This book easily sits is in the excellent end.

The Pros
Excellent narration and sound effects, I really got a feel for how fickle/mad Konrad Curze was
Interesting story of how/why Konrad became what he was
Good pacing

The Cons
Its short
Prior knowledge of the 40k background and Night Lords Chapter fills out the novel

Overall, if you are a big fan of the Night Lords chapter and its primarch this may be a buy for you at its normal price, for me and more casual 40k listeners I would recommend waiting for a 241 sale and using a credit, for those without any or much prior 40k knowledge you could skip this as it it quite short.

Chilling

My first (40k) audio book, couldn’t get enough of it! A culmination of horror and philosophy written with unique structure. Narration is compelling and of high quality. Don’t let chapter 2 put you off 😉 thoroughly enjoyed throughout, would highly recommend!

Vindication

It is a great listen and a must hear for all nightlord fans. A good insight into both nighthaunters and severtars mind sets. Great revelation about both not to be missed
