Summary

Very good overall

Very good story, especially the dialogue with the priest and the conclusion about the meaning of life, especially for someone condemned to die by a court.

20th century classic read by the author

I studied this book for my degree over forty years ago. I took my old copy down from the shelf and followed the text while listening to the audio. It is a French radio recording from the 1950’s but the sound is quite clear and Camus reads it well. Statement of the obvious, but of course it is all in French.

A milestone in literature I first discovered in my teens - poignantly read by Camus himself.

L’Etranger has always been a thought-provoking work for me and, in my opinion, the most erudite existentialist novel from a French author. I have only ever read it in French, and to hear it narrated by Camus himself, brings alive a cadence and rhythm that was formerly lost on me. Every word counts. At face value, it is a simple narrative, and can be enjoyed as such - but it is also a profound exposé of the Human condition, and its absurdity.

Simple style, complex content, my favourite book.

I am biased- I loved this book the first time I read it almost 50 years ago. It was wonderful to hear it read by the author himself. Meursault is a difficult character to relate to in the conventional sense. However, he gets under your skin and you can’t help being touched by his stark but moving view of life, death and the universe. A masterpiece of the French language.
