Summary

Introducing Geralt the Witcher - revered and hated - who holds the line against the monsters plaguing humanity in the best-selling series that inspired the Witcher video games and a major Netflix show.

After walking through the portal in the Tower of Swallows while narrowly escaping death, Ciri finds herself in a completely different world...an Elven world. She is trapped with no way out. Time does not seem to exist and there are no obvious borders or portals to cross back into her home world.

But this is Ciri, the child of prophecy, and she will not be defeated. She knows she must escape to finally rejoin the Witcher, Geralt and his companions - and also to try to conquer her worst nightmare. Leo Bonhart, the man who chased, wounded and tortured Ciri, is still on her trail. And the world is still at war.

Mixed opinions

So I finally finished the very large last book of the series!

I had to take 2 days to process the ending before writing my review.

I enjoyed the storyline up to the final battle with vilgefortz. I even enjoyed reading the side stories (even though I don’t know if the word “enjoyed” is the right word to use for the side story that took place in the war hospital on the battlefield- but it really made you feel like you were there and made you understand the horrible realities of war) although sometimes they could go on for a little longer then they needed too.

I just felt the ending was a little weak. Some things were just not wrapped up in a satisfactory way, perhaps because the world that the author created was too complicated and with too many characters and side plots to be wound up in a satisfactory way.

I have found myself comparing the way game of thrones tv season finished to the way this final book ended. In both cases we were not satisfied with the ending, however I don’t think anyone could suggest alternative because the world is too complicated.

Still definitely worth reading. Quite a challenge at times because of the book’s length but overall I did love the series overall. I’m glad I read them.

A long slog but worth it.

Parts of this book are quite naff, and it can be a long, hard slog. but the ending is worth it. I look forward to seeing how Netflix interprets some of the stranger parts of this book. Peter Kenny is excellent as always.

Brilliant, simply brilliant

Having played the games & watched the TV series I found myself drawn to the books wanting to experience more of Andrzej Sapkowski Witcher world. I was not disappointed. The books are outstanding! The narration by Peter Kenny is some of the best I’ve ever heard, and I’ve listened to audiobooks for over 30 years! I would thoroughly recommend these books both to people new to the Witcher world & to those who’ve played the games and/or watched the TV series.

I loved this series!

I really did enjoy all the books. they supplement the game well and are incredibly voiced by Peter Kenny. highly recommended to any fans of the game or those interested in a European fantasy series.

Peter Kenny and David French are amazing!!

I am loving this series and glad I opted to listen to it as opposed to reading. I laugh out loud at all the accents... grumpy Geralt, pious elves and coarse dwarves. I think I find the dwarves most humourous of all. Peter Kenny just brings it all to life. I guess I'm talking more about the narration here, but that's what added an extra bonus for me. On the story alone, I loved it as much as the rest of the books. It's just another link in the chain of the full story. Very entertaining.

Praise also needs to be given to David French. I cannot imagine how you go about translating older language styles. I so enjoyed hearing the medieval tone in many of the conversations. It seemed so appropriate, and usually added humour in many situations. I often reversed the audio and listened to them again, eg Geralt and Dandelion's argument, before they parted ways. Thankyou, David.

Peter Kenny is phenomenal.

You are totally immersed in the story from start to finish and know which characters he is playing. Whether it's the Welsh dwarves, Scottish Sintrans or Spanish Elves/Nilfgaardians. I prefer this to the TV production.
