About this listen
Rob Driscoll, former sergeant with 42 Commando, Royal Marines, served tours in Iraq, Kuwait and Kosovo. A born leader of fighting men, with the medals to prove it, he also endured three tours in Afghanistan. The third of those will go down in history as one of the UK military's darkest hours, for it marked the first time a British serviceman has been tried for a murder on the battlefield since the Second World War.
That man was Sergeant Alexander Blackman, Rob Driscoll's friend and fellow NCO in 42 Commando, and on the day in question they were commanding patrols within a few hundred yards of each other. Few men know what really went on that day in Helmand Province. Rob Driscoll is one. And in his book - with Blackman's blessing - he reveals all.
Yet Lethal Shot is more than a compelling insight into one of the most controversial rulings in recent military history. It is a clear-eyed account of life on active service with the Royal Marines, of incursions into war-torn countries where chaos and anarchy ruled - and of risking your life daily for politicians back home who won't support you.
In charting its author's career as a Royal Marine Commando, it unflinchingly demonstrates the real-life horrors of engaging at close quarters with enemies such as the Taliban - as well as the dangers that politics can bring to the ordinary fighting serviceman.
Sergeants Blackman and Driscoll were two sides of the same coin. One came home a hero, the other a wanted man. But for circumstance, it might have been the other way round.

Unfair
Great down to earth life story of one UK Royal Marine during modern warfare with highly unfair rules of engagement.

Excitement doesn't start until Capter 9
After a slow start, jump to Chapter 9. You'll then hear an excellent revelation of how British Higher Command prevents our services personnel doing their job. Kosavo illustrates a country where blood-fudes are the nor. Similarly, Afghanistan, in Chapter 9, shows why the Western Democracies were wasting their time trying to help these backward peoples. The recent withdrawal and Taliban take-over of Afghanistan is well predicted. We see why it's pointless trying to help people who have no interest in helping themselves.

A stunning and very moving account.
Well done Rob Driscoll, a brilliant insight into what really goes on in war, in one of the bravest and highly respected regiments in the world.
Finlay Robertson reads the book very well, I really didn’t want this book to end.
Highly recommended.

Gripping
I couldn't put this down and the writers experiences are pretty shocking. I also noticed quite early on that the authors dad has also written an excellent book about the Stephen Lawrence case. DCI Clive Driscoll.

Excellent listen
I was started to get a bit bored with the beginning, and all the crap decisions, turning down this and that, who knows where his career would of gone if he had made different decisions. But then when it gets going, it's a step by step, GRIPPING account of what it was like to be there and a testament to the professionalism of the Royal Marines Commandos.
And then finishes off with the fiasco that was Marine A, Sgt Blackman, a man who risked his life day in day out, followed orders, and got made a scape goat and hung out to dry by people who have never even fired a bullet, let alone be fired upon!!

Excellent
An honest an in depth portrayal of military life. The book has a great balance of the authors personal life and the deployments he was sent on. I could never imagine what it’s like to be in the situations he found himself in but this book gives a very detailed description of what it is like. Ended up dedicating half of day just to finish it as it was so well read. Still amazes me that there are people in this world willing to put themselves through this hardship for our freedoms. Heroes each and every one.

Lethal Shot
Great story, true accounts of what happened in these wars should always be told. I for one, listen to a lot and find that some of the stories a great burden for some of these hero’s to carry alone.
