At 24 years of age, U.S. Army Ranger Sean Parnell was named commander of a forty-man elite infantry platoon - a unit that came to be known as the Outlaws - and was tasked with rooting out Pakistan-based insurgents from a mountain valley along Afghanistan's eastern frontier. Parnell and his men assumed they would be facing a ragtag bunch of civilians, but in May 2006 what started out as a routine patrol through the lower mountains of the Hindu Kush became a brutal ambush. Barely surviving the attack, Parnell's men now realized that they faced the most professional and seasoned force of light infantry the U.S. Army had encountered since the end of World War II.
What followed was 16 months of close combat, over the course of which the platoon became Parnell's family: from Staff Sergeant Greg Greeson, the wise, chain-smoking veteran who never lost his cool; to Specialist Robert Pinholt, a buttoned-down conservative with the heart of a warrior and the mind of an economist; to Staff Sergeant Phil Baldwin, the platoon's voice of calm and reason, a man who sacrificed everything following the events of 9/11 - career, home, financial stability - to serve his country. But the cost of battle was high for these men: Over 80 percent were wounded in action, putting their casualty rate among the highest since Gettysburg, and not all of them made it home.

Compelling story
This audiobook had me drawn in from the start, a true depiction of the courage and bravery by those who served. Thank you for giving us a glimpse of life during this period.
The narration was on point, weirdly had me laughing given the sometimes dry sense of humour conveyed during the story.

Excellent Listen
This is the first Army genre Audiobook I've listened in a while and what a listen it was. The narrator done this book justice and kept the flow of the book perfectly running without me feeling bored as it was so action packed.
I feel so sorry for some if not all the character with what they went through the one part that really got to me was the male bitch ( you'll understand when you get to the part ) I was angry and devastated.
These guys as well as other serving members of the armed forces have done their country proud and should hold their heads up high. Hopefully all the people involved got help once their tour was over and weren't screwed over like most service members when they return with injuries or PTSD.
I'd highly recommend this Audiobook and I'll definitely listen to this one more than once.

Brilliant and utterly gripping
Fantastic story, really well narrated and edge of the chair stuff. No bravado just a very honest account of modern infantry combat. Hugely recommend this!

Awesome, frightening, eye openly honest , brave
The amazing true story of a platoon of soldiers in Afghanistan. Telling their story of comradeship, courage and brotherhood. It is brutally honest about the horrors of war and the effect on them. well written and spoken.

Superb
I've listened to quite a few accounts of war at this point, written by similarly awe-inspiring human beings, and this is the best so far in my opinion. There is just so much detail where it matters - either Sean has an incredible memory or there is a bit of artistic licence in fleshing out the scenes and filling in the gaps. It really doesn't matter though, as the bones are clearly based on truth and it makes for a hugely compelling read/listen! Talking of detail, the author doesn't hold back when it comes to the violence and gore, so be aware of that, but it's by no means one dimensional. One of the reasons I loved it is that it spends fair chunks of time describing interactions with the Afghan people, at various levels of society, that the platoon have dealings with, which I found fascinating and frequently moving. Characters in the story are rightly held up as heroes when appropriate and, conversely, have their names dragged through the muck when they've earned that instead, whether American or Afghan (or indeed Pakistani), the truth is laid bare, and there's no bias either way. Superb book!

Pace and realism abound. Great listen
Having read and listened to numerous book on action in theatres around the world over the years I looked forward to this as I did not know their company at all.
Wow. Wow. Wow.
Right from the off the story sucks you in. The narration is brilliant and you feel like your right there with the men. An almost Zulu moment they got into is expertly written.
I am always saddened by war and the effects is has on the men and women who play a part in it.
Get this book you won’t be let down.
