Summary

Through his pioneering work in the legendary country-punk band Uncle Tupelo, to his enduring legacy as the creative force behind the unclassifiable sound of Wilco, Jeff Tweedy has weaved his way between the underground and the mainstream - and back again.

Funny, disarming and deeply honest, his memoir casts light on his unique creative process and the stories that shaped his life and career, from a childhood spent in Illinois to the release of No Depression in the early '90s - which set the blueprint for alt-country - and later working with Mavis Staples and, posthumously, Woody Guthrie.

Honest, open and funny.

As a fan of virtually all of Jeff’s projects, I really enjoyed the insight and the dry humour to be had here. I especially liked hearing about his beginnings with music and his guitar playing....which echoed my own in so many ways. Honest, open and a pleasure to listen to.

Thanks Jeff.

Jeff (of course)

Gotta say this is a lovely mix of sad, inspiring and beautifully vulnerable account of Jeff’s life. Was genuinely sad when it ended.

An Amazing Insight Into the Man Behind The Music

This book was absolutely amazing all the way through, with a few surprise voices along the way which made things even better. Jeff reads his story so well and it’s filled with funny moments, but not without heartbreaking parts. Such an interesting guy.

So much more than a standard rock biography

Inciteful, wise and with a wry humour - Jeff reads his biography very well. Essential for Wilco fans!

Love Jeff Tweedy!

I didn’t know Jeff or much about Wilco or Uncle Tupelo but from initially listening to his How To Write One Song book and now this one, I do feel like I love the guy now. Honest, touching and oddly comforting, I love his style and what a life story. I have to say I gave his How to Write One Song book 5 stars though as it was her best songwriting book I’ve come across.

Superb autobiography worth listening to read by the author

I really enjoyed listening to this rather than reading it. Hearing from “the horse’s mouth” adds another layer to this very thoughtful, reflective and interesting autobiography. I got a real sense of Jeff Tweedy, the person, and his life and growth so far. Not just as a Wilco/Jeff Tweedy fan, but just as another human being.

Awesome

This is one of the best music autobiography’s. Honest and balanced. I wasn’t a huge Wilco fan (before) listening to this. But Jeff’s story got me to explore his whole musical universe and gave me a great insight into his wonderful artistry. He comes across as such a humble likeable person. Highly recommended.
