About this listen
By the time you read this, I will be dead....
When Victoria Davies was pushed off her stately home's roof in 2001, all evidence pointed to her husband Michael. But now, 20 years later a letter has appeared, written by Victoria before her death; a letter that was never received and a letter that brings new suspects into the fray; Labour MPs Shaun Donnal, Andrew MacIntyre and Charles Baker.
But two decades on, life has changed for these men. Donnal is now a paranoid alcoholic living on the streets of London, 'Andy Mac' is a popular YouTube Evangelist and Charles Baker is the current Conservative Home Secretary and the bookie's choice for next Prime Minister in the upcoming Leadership Election.
Now Detective Inspector Declan Walsh, saved from permanent suspension and newly transferred to the Temple Inn 'Last Chance Saloon' Crime Unit, must navigate a minefield filled with political intrigue, adulterous affairs, social activist aristocrats and brutal, bloody murder, as each suspect leads his new team to another problem, and skeleton to fall out of the closet....
The debut book in a new series of procedural crime thrillers featuring DI Walsh and the team of the Last Chance Saloon, Letter from the Dead is perfect for fans of J.D Kirk, L.J Ross, J M Dalgliesh, Ian Rankin, Damian Boyd, Alex Smith and Ann Cleeves, among others.

The interwoven plot.
Have to be aware of each twist and turn. Well navigated and found the plot didn't unravel until the end.

Loved the story and narrator but......
Loved it except for some cringe-making syntax.....
I was hoping it was just an odd one but no - all the way through.
I'm on the third book and virtually the first paragraph... "...it was at a party he found himself at....' 🙄
Very irritating... Might not make it to the fourth...

Excellent!
I really enjoyed this story. The plot was quite complicated, the main characters were likeable enough, and there are enough hints of problems in their various pasts to make me want to know more about them. I hadn’t come across the narrator before, but he is excellent. I’ve already downloaded Ep2, and am very pleased to see there are quite a few more to enjoy. Highly recommended.

An unusual story full of intrigue old and new.
A good story but the narration was a bit sticato. Hopefully that will improve as the series progresses.

A bit predictable
But on the whole an excellent start to a series - characters worth following. Well narrated too.

In the end it's sisters!
After enjoying the foodie themed A Dinner to Die For, book 8 in the Detective Inspector Declan Walsh series finally got to start at the beginning, where about to be suspended Walsh joins the London police team known as 'The Last Chance Saloon' crime unit. Like his new colleagues he's there because of his past conduct, his includes punching a priest for pedigree dog napping, no misdemeanor in my eyes.
It all kicks off with a closed case, a letter from the dead victim comes to light suggesting a miscarriage of justice. Twenty years previous, at politicians bash, Victoria Davis, hostess & wife of party fund raiser Michael is pushed of the roof of her stately home. He's convicted of her murder, and dies in prison, just as he starts writing his tell all memoirs of political shenanigans. Now, with the letter as new evidence, three individuals, then Labour MP's, are possibly back in the frame as suspects. One's currently an alcoholic living furtively on the streets, another's found god & social media, only one's still a politician but he's changed political allegiances! The one time social activist younger sister of the dead women has stepped successfully into the family business, become a high flyer, thanks to powerful backers. And in the background, there's another women with a dead sister pulling the strings. It all gets a bit convoluted, ending with a fake roof top shootout & another dead sister!

I enjoyed it
I enjoyed but it was very hard to keep track of all of the different characters. I don’t know whether to try the second in the series as the reviews aren’t brilliant.

New to me
Not read anything by this author before , but read the reviews and thought I’d give it a go. Thoroughly enjoyed it, lots of characters ( I tend to keep short notes of whose who as I’m going) great story and I loved the narrators voice. Would recommend.

A relief to listen to something I enjoyed
Best book I have listened to in a while. A pacey and engaging story, with an interesting main protagonist
