Summary

Former soldier. Ex-copper. Current man on the edge.

Shunned by his old colleagues, and dividing his time between a dead-end job and the bottom of a whisky bottle, former Police Scotland detective superintendent Bob Hoon’s life is a mess.

Then an old face from Hoon’s Special Forces days turns up asking for help: His teenage daughter has been missing for months, the police have drawn a blank, and he needs the kind of help that only Hoon can provide.

And besides, Hoon owes him one.

From the Highlands of Scotland, to the mean streets of London, Hoon’s relentless hunt for the girl will see him make new friends and encounter old enemies. Enemies who know what happened to the girl. And to hundreds more like her.

But Hoon’s been given something that makes him dangerous, something he thought he’d long-since lost: a purpose.

He may be a disgraced ex-copper, a barely functioning alcoholic, and a borderline psychopath, but Bob Hoon still believes in justice.

And he’s just the foul-mouthed bastard to dish some out.

From JD Kirk’s DCI Logan series, Northwind is the first in a new series of action-packed thrillers for fans of Lee Child, James Patterson, and Mark Dawson.

Hoon is a hoot! I'm no kidding

If there is a more foul mouthed, annoying, tenacious and stubborn character in fiction I haven't read one. when I say annoying I don't mean for the reader but for almost every other character he interacts with. Hoon has stepped out from behind Jack Logan's big shadow into the light and owns it! The next installment can not come too quick. I will miss the intricate and imaginative Hoonerisms until then. The story roars around London at breakneck speed allowing the author to display Hoon's real character and motivations whilst also giving and insight into why he is who he is. Great story, great fun, more please.

Absolutely brilliant

Having listened to the full series of DCI Logan books I did wonder if the spin off would work.

It did!

Hoon is a rude, obnoxious person but with a good loyal heart. He tries to do his best but often fails.

But he is SO FUNNY

I laughed out loud so many times throughout this audiobook, even though the storyline is tragic and brutal.

He comes into his own in a spectacular way and is worthy of the role as main character.

But BE WARNED……. The language is from the gutter and when Hoon is speaking about every other word is a swear word. Or sometimes he even manages what feels like a whole sentence made up entirely of profanities.

There is also much brutality, but I have to confess even as quite a peace-loving person, I found so much of that was laugh out loud funny too.

Not a book for the faint of heart, but sooooo good!

JD Kirk does it again!

Love this book, feel like we should all let out our inner Hoon from time to time.
Great story, great narration and here is to many more adventures with the colourful Hoon. J D Kirk has a knack for story telling in a very funny and dark way, unputdownable and devoured in practically one sitting, I must learn to pace better to prolong the enjoyment and yet.. I fail everytime when caught up in the story. Highly recommend if you like dark humour, grumpy, sweary, cantankerous, slightly mad anti hero’s, well this is a good place to start.
You shouldn’t love Hoon, but ultimately you do end up doing so. Under all his armour he has a real heart.

Brilliant

I didn’t get anything done for two days just listened, mesmerised by this tale!
Hoon’s rants are a thing of wonder and are both hilarious and painfully graphic.
More please!

Maggie Mae

I am an avid audio book listener and I cannot recommend this book enough. I gorged on it. As I reflect on what attracted me so much to the book it was just everything. The characters are strong and being Scottish I just loved the language and one liners from our anti hero 😂 the story kept me hooked and I did not see the twist at the end. The narration was brilliant as you disappeared into the book not even realising it is one person doing all the characters. The accents were brilliant 🤩
I will be putting book 2 on my watch list and going back to listen to all of JD KIRK books and DCI Jack Logan

F*cking Hilarious!

I was so excited when my pre-order of Northwind arrived and started to listen immediately. Be warned though, if you haven't met Hoon in the Logan series then don't read/listen if you are offended by swear words. Hoon is VERY foul-mouthed, self-opinionated and offends everyone he meets, though his swearing is hilariously inventive!

Northwind is a cracking good fast paced crime thriller which grabbed me right from the start. There's loads of action, a bit of gore, and lots of humour. Can't wait for another solo Hoon adventure!

As with J D Kirk's DCI Logan series, this one is also narrated by the fabulous Angus King who does an amazing job making a fabulous book totally out of this wor

Be prepared to be “blown away” - with gasps, laughs and not wanting the rollercoaster to stop

I just cannot say how much I enjoyed this book.
I have 300 or so in my library and that’s not including the “included “ ones.
If you’ve familiar with DCI Logan by JD Kirk you don’t need to be for this one. But also why on Earth are you not familiar with him😂🤣😂🤣
This book swept me away on such an adventure it was brilliant. The laughs along the way, with the continuous dripping of sarcasm but also the reality and the severity of the story.
Angus king I pay homage to you ( yet again) your narration skills to say are amazing is an understatement.
I hope a second instalment is coming soon.
Amazing amazing amazing
And yes I got lots of looks when out and about when I burst out laughing … or gasping with shock

Absolutely the BEST - Hoon is a literary gift!!

Still huge fan of DCI Logan series with JD Kirk and narrated by Angus King on Audible having enjoyed Hoon's politically incorrect vocabulary and actions as supporting role- - BUT NOW as lead... He is a gem to follow along. Story balances the seriousness of the criminality with crime fiction humor at its best. Really enjoyed the journey with Hoon. Can't wait for the next installment in the trilogy! Great Job!!

A great new series

Hoon is a hoot. Vulgar, rough, obnoxious yet, somehow, quite likeable. I can only imagine the author having a tremendous amount of fun coming up with insults for Hoon to spout. The Hoon character reminded me of DI Steel by Stuart MacBride in his series. Obnoxious at times but loveable.

The story was good. Kept me interested for sure. I liked the cameo by Jack Logan. The narrator, Angus King, (not my Senator) is one of the best. He adds a lot to the enjoyment of this book. I look forward to more Bob Hoon.

Holy cow this was fun!

J.D. Kirk's books are loads of fun. They have a gripping story and engaging characters who are brought to life with the amazing work of narrator Angus King. Quite simply, get started people! If you haven't delved into the work of J.D. Kirk then you're missing out. Oh, don't forget the strong tea and bacon rolls (with brown sauce), you'll need them.

Full gambit of emotions

I have been looking forward to the story of Bob Hoon ever since I seen it was coming and this book did not disappoint.
1st I think JD Kirk is one of the best thriller writers of today.
2nd I think Angus King is one of the best narrator I’ve ever listened to.
3rd I experienced the full gambit of emotions listening to this. I laughed out loud. I got angry. I got teary eyed. I felt sad. I felt despair. And excited for the next book in this series.
Bob Hoon is a foul-mouthed hero. And his swearing is imaginative. But he also has a heart of gold as you will find out within the first few minutes of the story. And he is absolutely loyal to his friends.

I love this but....

Bob Hoon as protagonist is a freaking godsend. If only for his incredibly creative and baroque swearing. I have been tempted to take notes. I will listen to Angus King read anything. My only problem with this book is that there is no real resolution. The author is obviously leaving open opportunity for further titles but at the expense of a sense of closure. JD Vance, if you are reading this, Hoon is a great character. But don't belabour the whole "Loop" conspiracy. That is going to get tiresome fast.

Laugh Out Loud Writing

if you're the sort that can't handle swearing then don't pick this book but if you like a sharp, witty character with interesting new turns of phrases then this is definitely the read for you. I thoroughly enjoyed this character. The story is engaging, too.

Do JD Kirk's crimefighters ever close a case?

Answer: Almost never. More frequently, they chase their quarry through multiple books. Almost always, they or their loved ones are captured and/or tortured, etc., often due to stupid mistakes. Or they think they've closed a case, and it turns out they haven't (and don't even know it). It's a pity his otherwise great characters so often turn out to be . . . incompetent? and all the villains, who are definitively uninteresting, are apparently unbeatable. I'm returning this one, because I've lost interest in finishing it. The tedium of the villains' future victories and the completely unsatisfying conclusion are well foreshadowed.
