Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Long before the First Order, before the Empire, before even The Phantom Menace...Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in the High Republic.

It is a golden age. Intrepid hyperspace scouts expand the reach of the Republic to the furthest stars, worlds flourish under the benevolent leadership of the Senate and peace reigns, enforced by the wisdom and strength of the renowned order of Force users known as the Jedi. With the Jedi at the height of their power, the free citizens of the galaxy are confident in their ability to weather any storm. But the even brightest light can cast a shadow, and some storms defy any preparation.

When a shocking catastrophe in hyperspace tears a ship to pieces, the flurry of shrapnel emerging from the disaster threatens an entire system. No sooner does the call for help go out than the Jedi race to the scene. The scope of the emergence, however, is enough to push even Jedi to their limit. As the sky breaks open and destruction rains down upon the peaceful alliance they helped to build, the Jedi must trust in the Force to see them through a day in which a single mistake could cost billions of lives.

Even as the Jedi battle valiantly against calamity, something truly deadly grows beyond the boundary of the Republic. The hyperspace disaster is far more sinister than the Jedi could ever suspect. A threat hides in the darkness, far from the light of the age, and harbours a secret that could strike fear into even a Jedi's heart.

NOT Star Wars

The author is more concerned about their own consumerist lifestyle than understanding Star Wars and the mytos behind Star Wars - Avoid this like the plague if you're a REAL Star Wars fan. Absolute cash-in on the franchise from this lazy audio-book.

music ruins the presentation

totally ruined by sound effects and music, what should of been a great listen is a jumbled mess of audio demanding attention. what a failure!

Feeling overdramatised and uninspiring

I'm at about 10 chapters so far and it feels very overdramatized. The narrator seems to give grave importance to the most benign sentences which make the opening chapters feel slow and even a waste of time. The Jedi are currently appearing as infallible and many are exquisitely dressed or of a pristine demeanor which just makes them feel unrelatable. They're a little too high and mighty and that dissuades someone like me, a fan of the humble hermit types. That and the fact there's just so many of them being introduced along with other characters that you have no idea who to root for or why.

I hope the writing comes across better from the page. If it comes across the same as the audio is read, it's bloated and slow. It doesn't give any pace to impending dangers or action and chunks of exposition are given to characters of genuinely no importance other than their immediate service to the story. There also seems to be liberties taken in its plot layout. i.e. one scene is set "60 minutes to impact" and ends on a cliffhanger. The next time we meet the same characters, it seems to have taken them 30 minutes to do anything at all, as the chapter claims to be "30 minutes to impact."

Now, I'm no stranger to the EU. This kind of writing is not uncommon to Star Wars or sci-fi/fantasy in general but I've been loving everything that the new-era Lucasfilm has been putting out since acquisition until now. This seems like wet lettuce by comparison to The Last Jedi or The Mandalorian. Perhaps these characters need to come to fruition and the state of this era needs its web-spinning before we can get nicely entangled in it. As of right now, the book is coming across as I initially perceived its cover; a little bland and falling far short of inspirational despite an obvious effort otherwise.

forgettable

Im not a fan of this book due to it introducing 30+ characters around an event that could have been an interesting but they spoil it 1/2 way through. my main issue is you don't spend enough time with any character to care about them.

A great start to a new Era

A solid story with a great reading. Sound effects can somewhat hinder the experience though when overdone

Great introduction to the high republic era

Overall a great listen.
A bit hard to follow at the beginning but brings it all together very well.
Stick with it and you won't be disappointed.

How to keep you awake

Stories should speak for themselves.
The reading does not require an overabundance of sound effects and heavily dramatised music to force tension into the story, especially when the reader has already has a dramatic style of delivery.
I could only manage a few chapters before I gave up.
I look forward to reading the book on Kindle instead.

sadly underwhelming

First of all, I didn't finish the book.
As a big Star Wars fan I was dissapointed as, in my opinion, the book failed to deliver in multiple fronts.
-The story was not engaging, atleast as far as I managed to listen.
-The language felt like the book was directed towards a much younger audience than I expected, which made me feel like the characters acted as teenagers.
-I never felt engaged with any of the caracters and did not care what hapened to them.
-I don't like sound effects in an audiobook. It ruins my experience and kind of shatters the illusion.

This is a highly personal review and I hope you have a better experience if you descide to read- or listen to the book, but I cannot recommend it to anyone older than 20.

May the Force be with you. Allways.

Loved it

This was a great book, a great story. What made it even better was the narration by Marc Thompson.
I have never heard anyone tell a story like Marc, he elevated this book to another level and it was an. absolute pleasure to listen to his narration.

I seriously think Marc is the best narrator I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Well done to you, sir.

Great introduction to the new period.

A great lead in to this new period of the High Republic.
Interesting new characters with a special mention to the villains of this particular story. Looking forward to more as the stories continue.
Marc Thompson’s performance cannot be faulted. Outstanding.

Very enjoyable.

Great narration and some truly fun characters. it kind of blends A New Hope with The Phantom Menace into a Star Wars distater movie. There might be TOO many characters in the end, but I came to enjoy most of them.

Great Introduction to the Whole New Era

This book is engaging, and I think a wonderful addition to the Star Wars canon. Soule develops the action slowly, choosing to unfold the story rather than deliver it all at once. The end of Part One is particularly moving, and a brilliant moment representing the complexity of the Jedi and the Force. I would say, however, there are some faults. The characters are highly undeveloped, particularly the Jedi. They are pristine and glossy. Their "faults" (if they have any at all) seem superficial at best. The action is far more engaging than the characters, unfortunately.

I have never been a fan of Marc Thompson's narration, and this might be his worst one yet. His accents are forced and his delivery is laboured. I often have to tune out his choices in order to enjoy the story.

Exciting start to a new era!

This book is excellent. Probably the best description of a galaxy wide disaster in all of star wars. This story has scope and depth and is very character driven. I felt for characters that we only knew for one or two chapters, for example.
