Summary

The more I thought about it, the more I realised my career has been unusual. How did I manage to do everything wrong but still end up on the front cover of magazines, headlining world tours and achieving Top Five albums? How did I attract such obsessive and fanatical fans, many of whom take everything I do or say very personally, which is simultaneously flattering but can also be tremendously frustrating? Even this I somehow cultivated without somehow meaning to. My accidental career.

Limited Edition of One is unlike any other music book you will ever have hear.

Part the long-awaited memoir of Steven Wilson, whose celebrated band Porcupine Tree began as teenage fiction before unintentionally evolving into a reality that encompassed Grammy-nominated records and sold-out shows around the world, before he set out for an even more successful solo career.

Part the story of a 21st-century artist who achieved chart-topping mainstream success without ever becoming part of the mainstream. From Abba to Stockhausen, via a collection of conversations and thought pieces on the art of listening, the rules of collaboration, lists of lists, personal stories, professional adventurism (including food, film, TV, modern art), old school rock stardom, how to negotiate an obsessive fanbase and survive on social media and dream-fever storytelling.

Progtentious progtifications

I like Steven Wilson, he seems self deprecating and fully aware of the ridiculous world he's found himself in. Great insights on creating music and being a music fan. I was taken aback that he doesn't seem to rate himself as a guitarist because when i first heard PT in 1995 or thereabouts me snd my friends were like bloody hell this guy's amazing! The chapters with Mick Wall were a little weird, like they'd recorded a conversation, transcribed it, heavily edited it, then read it back again. They should have just included the original conversation, I'm sure we could have handled it, we all listen to podcasts these days. Also for some reason I don't like the way Mick enunciates the title "Future Bytes". Anyhow it's a good book, highly recommended.

Immensely enjoyable

I have read this, I own two copies, one signed and one for reading but didn't want to pass up the chance of having the audiobook and hearing Steven Wilson reading it. Really interesting book if you're a fan and absolute must have. It's one I'm going to listen to again and again.

Love it!

Though a massive Steven Wilson fan, I dropped off his last few albums. I saw this pop up and thought I'd give it a listen... and I am so glad I did!

Very interesting and well narrated, it is great hearing things from his perspective and background.

I remembered how much of an inspiration he was to me on my own musical journey and now I am very much looking forward to catching up on his discography!

Steven Wilson tells the story of his unique career

Steven is always eloquent and engaging to listen to in his interviews and lyrics and, thankfully, this audiobook continues that tradition.

With his wide ranging music taste and eclectic music output over the decades, Steven offers a unique perspective on the music industry as a whole.

Awesome audiobook

Being around the same age as Steven and growing up playing music and later really appreciating PT and his solo records, this is a very interesting listen. He has done a great job here as he does with his music, much appreciated!

Listening

Being a Steve Wilson fan, and buying his records , cds, going to the gigs. It was odd listening to him just talking. would of like a hit more on the personal relationships with his fellow band members a bit more. But overall s real fan boys listen. Not sure it would hold the interest of a passing listener.

Well worth a listen, hope there’s edition two

Really enjoyable, love it. Great entertainment from a great entertainer.
Obviously the book is music obsessed, but we would we want anything else?
Hope there is a follow up as some topics feel they could be expanded and still be interesting , may I suggest on songwriting or particular love of certain records.

arriving somewhere but not where I thought

I met Steven Wilson in a London record store during a signing promotion for The Raven That Refused To Sing on its release. I had the Blu Ray copy and he had not held one in his hands before - hadn't even seen the finished article - ...it was a limited edition of one in that space of time. I listened to him speak to me just as I have listened to this marvellous book . It was strange that I thought that I was the only person in the world who read "Grimble" to my school classes in the 70s yet SW reads it to his children . A very good selection of anecdotes, opinions and philosophies .

Best way of "reading" this book

Bought the physical book but when I learnt that Steven Wilson reads it in form of this audiobook I had to choose it over the physical book. This was the most legitimate and enjoyable way for me, hearing all these stories from the man himself. I heard stories from his childhood in such details I never imagined I would. His short story at the end was a nice surprise too. The book is a fantastic mixture of topics, which could be heard/read separately from the others, which I find a good way to structure it. Well done Mick Wall and Steven Wilson!
