Summary
Jerry White's London in the Eighteenth Century is an unrivalled, panoramic account of the city's dramatic century of rebirth by its leading expert.
London in the eighteenth century had risen from the ashes. The city and its people had been brought to the brink by the Great Fire of 1666. But the century that followed was a period of vigorous expansion, of scientific and artistic genius, of blossoming reason, civility, elegance and manners. It was also an age of extremes: of starving poverty and exquisite fashion, of joy and despair, of sentiment and cruelty.
In Jerry White’s acclaimed history of London’s magnificent and boisterous rebirth we witness the astonishing drama of daily life in the midst of this burgeoning city.

Detailed and interesting
Having listened to the 19th Century book previously and enjoying it I was thrilled to see this come up. Once again a vivid and detailed book about the city. The main characters, the trends and the fashions. All subjects are covered well. Very well read indeed. On to the 20th century now!

Pronunciations
I really, REALLY wish someone had gone through this and corrected some of the pronunciations. Some of them, including ‘Holburn’, are inexcusable for anyone who’s even just visited London 🙄

Disappointing and dull
Interesting but a bit dry.
The narrator cannot pronounce basic words which he isn’t suitable for voicing books. He also lack the skills to make the words of the grab your interest and enliven the text

Interesting but not interesting enough
There were many interesting parts. Yet, for some reason I was unable to stay tuned in, my mind drifted a lot whilst listening. I think it was more because it most of it was recited in a fairly monotone.

seriously researched (largely social) history of 18th C London, but 'y' = 'th'!
well-researched and by and large well-read account of 18th century London. one really irritating failing however: for some bizarre reason the producer has invited the narrator to pronounce 'ye' (meaning 'the') using the y-sound found in 'you' as opposed to the correct pronunciation 'th'. what appears to be a 'y' was simply a typographic substitute for the old English character 'thorn' - pronounced 'th.. I am sure Mr White knows this: was he given no editorial oversight of the final product? This is a shame because it makes the text sound, at times, tacky and amateurish

Let down by poor narration
I gave up listening when I had heard one too many words mispronounced. Why didn't anyone correct the narrator?

very disappointing
Sadly this book appears to be a series of lists of dates, names etc without much in the way of comment or background. I sent it back

Superb
London in the Eighteenth Century is the last of Jerry White's fantastic London trilogy. As with the other two books, I enjoyed every second. This book has you living, tasting, and smelling life in the capital in this period like no other. I'd love to author to tackle London life in that most interesting of periods, the 17th Century. The book is superbly narrated by Neil Gardner, an excellent choice. I have the books in hardback too, but these are big heavy volumes and it's a treat to have them read to you.
