Summary

A RADIO 4 BOOK AT BEDTIME, READ BY MEERA SYAL

Two cultures. Two families. Two people.

A BBC 2 BETWEEN THE COVERS BOOK CLUB PICK

THE NEW INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER FROM THE BOOKER PRIZE-SHORTLISTED AUTHOR OF BRICK LANE

Yasmin Ghorami has a lot to be grateful for: a loving family, a fledgling career in medicine and a charming, handsome fiancé, fellow doctor Joe Sangster.

But as the wedding day draws closer and Yasmin's parents get to know Joe's firebrand feminist mother, both families must confront the unravelling of long-held secrets, lies and betrayals.

As Yasmin dismantles her own assumptions about the people she holds most dear, she's also forced to ask herself what she really wants in a relationship and what a 'love marriage' actually means.

Love Marriage is a story about who we are and how we love in today's Britain—with all the complications and contradictions of life, desire, marriage and family. What starts as a captivating social comedy develops into a heart-breaking and gripping story of two cultures, two families and two people trying to understand one another.

Really Something Different

This was for me a fascinating insight into different lives. Beautifully crafted. I felt at last I could understand more clearly the lives, personalities and desires of people whose humanity was inclusive.

Long story for nothing.

Story is boring and not exiting. Waste of time for me. Sorry. But Ayesha Dharker's performance is perfect.

Excellent, entertaining, contemporary

Really great read which tells a fascinating tale of the quagmire of contemporary life. As always, Monica Ali expertly blends humour with pathos and narrator Ayesha Dharker delivers it all with flair.

Bloody brilliant

This grabbed me immediately , and had me lingering in the car to listen to more, felt that the characters were very real , got the different voices convincingly, characters that could in less skilful hands have been caricatures were nuanced , human , virtues and flaws and they all behaved in ways that were believable (almost )
The narration was superb ,enhanced the experience , fabulous , will be recommending widely xx

Okay, too rambling

Zoned out a lot during it as story didn't seem to go anywhere, but at points was quite entertaining.

Not as good as Brick Lane

Definitely not as good as Brick Lane. The storyline in Love Marriage is somewhat interesting but predictable. The story drags on and has many unnecessary repetitions.

A great book, very long but worth it.

I found the book to be deep and meaningful. I found I could only read it in small bites, too much to think about. For me it was not a quick, ‘can’t put it down read’ but a book to reflect upon. I great author and excellent voice actor. Thanks

Better off reading yourself

Slow start setting the scene but hang tight because it pulls a 180 and gets juicy and good real fast from there.

Performance wasn't good at all though, very confusing because she flips between accents in the same characters, e.g. one moment the character has a London accent and the next he's Indian.

Nuanced and rich!

I liked a lot the profound compassion of characters. The author displays a magic undestanding of human nature and relationships. Brlliant!
