About this listen

Madame Burova - tarot reader, palmist and clairvoyant is retiring and leaving her booth on the Brighton seafront after 50 years, but before she does she has some promises to keep and some secrets to reveal - the new novel from The Sunday Times best-selling author of The Keeper of Lost Things.

Imelda Burova has spent a lifetime keeping other people's secrets, and her silence has come at a price. She has seen the lovers and the liars, the angels and the devils, the dreamers and the fools. Her cards had unmasked them all, and her cards never lied. But Madame Burova is weary of other people's lives and other people's secrets; she needs rest and a little piece of life for herself. Before that, however, she has to fulfil a promise made a long time ago. She holds two brown envelopes in her hand, and she has to deliver them.

In London, it is time for another woman to make a fresh start. Billie has lost her university job, her marriage and her place in the world when she discovers something that leaves her very identity in question. Determined to find answers, she must follow a trail which might just lead right to Madame Burova's door.

In a story spanning over 50 years, Ruth Hogan conjures a magical world of 1970s holiday camps and seaside entertainers, eccentrics, heroes and villains, the lost and the found. Young people, with their lives before them, make choices which echo down the years. And a wall of death rider is part of a love story which will last through time.

Great story -again set in inclusive context

I love Ruth Hogan and the characters she creates. All of her books are really about diversity and inclusion - whether it's disability, sexuality or race, the characters are always a positive portrayal of the disability and in this one has a superb negative portrayal of neurotypical Vivienne.

I loved the Romany setting and the "power of the cards" but most of all I loved the characters and a brilliant description of both the 1970s and 2020. On my favourites list for sure.

Ruth Hogan never disappoints.

This is another beautiful book, by one of my favourite authors. Just like all of the other books that I’ve listened to, I didn’t want it to end. Like the others, it’s funny, intriguing, heart warming. The narration, by Nina Wadia brings each character to life.
If you’ve not listened to any of Ruth’s book, please do. You won’t be disappointed.

Heartwarming

A lovely story, brilliantly narrated.
I llove this author; she writes about human nature with a little bit of magic, for those of us who enjoy grown up ‘fairy stories’ with a sprinkling of sadness and romance. Perfect for rainy days, holidays and me-days 😊

Well narrated and well written

This was one of those books that I would make excuses to do housework so I could listen to more uninterrupted.

Highly recommended!!!

I would give this book 10 stars if I could, it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. I loved everything about it. I raced through it, but at the same time didn’t want it to end. I will miss the characters - who soon became my fictional friends. The narrator has a lovely voice which is very important when listening on audible.
