About this listen
Like poop on your shoe, bad luck had a knack for sticking Charlie wherever he went. And it sure did stink.
Wormholes to a distant galaxy? Done it. Alien slavery? Yup. Forced gladiatorial combat? That too. Space pirate and eventual rebel leader? Check. Rising to the pinnacle of power as Dragon King? Uh-huh.
Charlie, it seemed, had seen and survived it all, and at long last it looked like he’d finally earned himself a little peace and quiet. That is until a whole new threat reared its ugly head. Now, not only were those he held dear at risk, but the entire planet, and possibly even the whole damn solar system.
Yet again, Charlie was in the right place at the wrong time, finding himself forced to evolve into something new. Something more. But this time, on this tech-driven world, the space engineer from the past thought he might finally have the advantage.
But then again....

Light-hearted and big-hearted space magic & tech
I was provided with a free audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review.
If you've followed Charlie through the first three books you know what to expect, and book 4 delivers it.
The culmination of book 3 saw Charlie, Layla, Bob, Hunze and Ara catapulted into Earth's future where Charlie and his old ship the Asbru are ancient hstory and taught to students as part of the history of human spaceflight. So Charlie's appearance is quite surprising to them.
In this world, humanity is recovering from a fierce war with aliens, the population is a fraction of what it was and a rebuilding operation is underway, controlled by AI minds in the major cities. However, all is not as it seems. As readers we know that problems have a habit of following Charlie around, and sure enough a quite sizable problem turns up that the gang will need to use magic and tech to solve.
As well as the usual gang this book introduces new characters - the city AIs particularly Cal, the over-exuberant teenager Ripley and her ship Eddie. (As a Hitch Hikers fan, I can't fully trust a ship powered by a computer called Eddie, but this one is a good egg).
The ending is satisfying in that we have a high-octane action sequence followed by an opportunity for the characters to reflect and get closure, but we still don't know the identity of the villain. I'm assuming book 5 comes into play in this regard.
In all, given what an appalling year 2020 has been in so many respects, it's good to be able to indulge in a bit of pure enjoyable escapism with Charlie and his friends.

Enjoyable series
This is the type of SF books I used to read in the 80s, Not overly taxing but enjoyable and light.
I would say they a would be better aimed at the young adult market.
I liked the narrator and the books get better through the series.
One negative is that the scenes can jump around a little, and feel that they have been edited down from larger text, e.g. some fights start and instantly end as if a dozen paragraphs have been cut out to shorten the book.
