“A plan that could be roughly boiled down to just wing it”

Thoroughly enjoyable rpg. Nice to have a character going off solo as so many focus on team building. Sometimes the story slowed down, but there’s a ton of fighting to keep you interested.
Great magic/skills system.
Excellent narration with great pacing, intensity and chatter voices.
Really looking forward to the next book in the series!
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.

Really enjoyed it! Bravo!

The story was great! I can not wait for the next audiobook!

Loved the narrator as well. Really pleasant to listen to! First time listening to Mr. Baldree but I will be checking out his other work for sure.

It just felt like a great all-round book! The sense of progression was amazing, highly addictive and kept me wanting to know how the MC and the overall story would progress.

It struck a good balance of story, progression, character development, including others than the MC. Everything felt relevant to the story and the "stage" that was created.

Really happy and excited about this series! I am sure it will be amazing!

Post apocalyptic archer!

This book is amazing. It follows a level headed MC who seems more at home living in the system than out.

Jack takes an unusual class of an archer and is a total badass. Similarly, some side characters show unique and interesting growth. I particularly like how the author uses different POV's when describing the events of certain side characters.

Finally, TB the narrator did a fantastic job as usual. I can't wait for book 2!

good book

very much enjoyed the story. the narrator doesn't have the best rang in terms of voices for different characters but he is clear and easy to understand.

Better than expected

I've quickly discovered that any story that has come from Royal Road and has gotten good reviews is most certainly worth my time. I have listened to several litrpg books on here. My favourites so far been Defiance of the Fall & Mother of learning. This story ranks a very closely to those two titles.

The only thing Id say was a let down was the fact the narrator didn't find a way to distinguish his voice between characters. You'd have to really pay attention to whom the narrator said was talking as he read everyone with the same tone. The characters didnt really have their own voice in book so that wont have helped. Thats why I give this a 4 out of 5. Its easily one of the best litrpg books I have read, but you can tell the author is still finding his way. I have already bought the next book and cant wait to get lost in this series.

Well worth a credit!

The good is better than the bad(barely).

The good first.
Story is decent, the characters are interesting and the author doesn’t just make the MC op, but actually gives the other characters their own powers. Sure, the MC is op, but he actually has some opponents that gives of the feeling that they can beat him. The characters also seem competent most of the time.

The narrator is pretty good. He isn’t great for different kinds of voices, but the MC is decent. Lack of vocal differences sums it up.

The worst flaw of the book is that the author hasn’t mattered the art of “show, don’t tell”. This is a flaw with all authors who writes these kinds of stories. They want to show off a side of a power or character or some backstory, but u don’t get to experience it. The author just says it is. The MC is fast? Fast a a car. The thoughts of the MC? Detailed explanation of why the MC thinks that way, but he doesn’t let the audience experience it. It’s just told.
This is an issue most litrpg authors has, because they think we will find it cool to just be told someone can do something. We would like to experience it. It’s why most of these series just gets worse and worse with more books.

Conclusion. It’s a decent enough read, but nothing major. Some boring parts that I just skipped. Fighting is also pretty interesting, but again, only when fighting people. Fighting beasts are pretty boring.

Story of a Murder Hobo

Half way through and I am struggling to finish. The main character is just a murder hobo. So much so the author even jokes about him being a murder hobo. Kindof hard to follow a story about a character almost sexually excited about killing people and beasts. He doesn't even communicate with other characters to get your attention off his murder hoboness since he is antisocial. I am going to finish since I spent a token on the book but overall I would have preferred to have passed over this one.

Not the best

Some good moments but overall you can zone out of 90% of the book and not miss a thing. Progression and world building just not there. Concept would be cool just not done quite right. Baldree makes it tolerable.

A fun and interesting read!

I have been reading this series on for a long time now and I am excited to see it in e-book and audible format, especially with my favorite narrator!

The author does an excellent job of telling an interesting story with great development of both plot and individual characters.

The LITRPG mechanics are explained well and the book is accessible, even for people who have not previously read this genre. 100% recommend this book for fans of the genre and newbies as well.

The best compliment I can give is that the story is interesting and I keep wanting to know what happens next. I think that's the hallmark of a great book.

mixed bag

I'm not a fan of main characters being sidelined from the major story and plot, while other characters just get all the story focus and development.

Travis once again smashes the audio part out if the park.

I feel like they're is potential here but the author needs to stop just having the mc just be an isolated murder machine. I was so bored with all his stuff mean while piece of sh*t side characters get major development and plotlines. but the mc just keeps getting left behind I really can't stand that

I'm tempted right now to just get a refund of my credit.

B+ for me

I just want to give an honest review. This book was just ok. I didn't think it was great though. I think that there was just to much going on and it didn't end well.
***spoilers***
the explanation of him was super weird. They say he is a person who loves challenges. He just wants more and more challenges, but then he seemed super soft when telling about his background story. It was kind of weird.
Caroline was a waste to be honest. I have no idea why she was even a side character. LOL.
Jakob is cool. Even though I think he was not strong, he at least made sense to me. Even Richard made sense to me. What happened to William at the end? The class structure and race structured systems are no helpful at all. Only good thing is the blood line. I like that. I liked the snake god as well. he was cool
That is enough spoilers for now. The book will have another part in the series which is good, but I still don't see the wow factor. I can wait on the next book, but I have no excitement right now about it. Thanks

This book could be edited down to six hours.

It would still be boring to listen to but it would help cut down on the meandering and monotonous parts.

Way to many stats

The story is… ok but the repetitive stats almost made me return the book, expect to skip a lot of the book due to very very repetitive descriptions of stats and powers. The book also lacks direction in the last third of the book it feels like fluff to make sure he book longer, seemingly serving no purpose to moving the story forward. Save your credit for something better it should not be hard to find.

I would have used a pen name too.

I would have used a pen name too. I thought role play games developed because people loved great fantasy books and wanted somehow be a part of those worlds. A game can't be a great book, it has to be unnecessarily detailed a clunky to allow for establishing rules and give players freedom. Books like this are an ugly hybrid. They are either a book needlessly bogged down by rules and levels and myriad uninteresting choices, or an elaborate explanation of a game that you can't play. This book was an endless point accrual with minor character development and no resolution.

SPOILER ALERT

System Apocalypse ahead.

I was gifted this book through Atheon Audio for responding to a Reddit post.

That being said, this is a straightforward review.

Being in the 'System Apocalypse' genre of LitRPG, the book adheres to the basics prescribed. Nothing unique really, outside of skills and bloodlines. etc.

World building is essentially suspended due this first area being a tutorial. Which means it's an experience grind and I do mean a grind.

Humorless, like a job at KFC or any fast food joint where everyone has quit except you, this book doesn't have a single light moment in it. Just the grind.

I can't really offer a positive or negative review bc it's just so utterly predictable in all ways. If you've read a System Apocalypse book before, NOTHING in this will surprise or delight you.

Another OP MC grinding their way to the top of the chain just to survive their nemesis who is doing the same.
