About this listen

Making of an Addict takes you through the childhood and early adult life of social media influencer James Shinny Davenport, delving deep into the immense struggles he faced as a result of addiction to drugs, food, drink, and sex.

In a complete "tell all" story, the Manchester man talks about the hurt he caused to not only himself but those closest to him too, before finally finding happiness in recovery, after several failed attempts.

The former Leeds Rhinos player, professional boxer and frontman of the band Hanky Park, hopes this book can save the lives of those who are going through the same thing, and will offer some much-needed advice to people suffering in silence.

Recovery is about recognising the traits in yourself and using them for good. There is no cure for addiction, only prevention.

If he can do it, you can too.

Honest, down to earth, hear it as it is.

I was in two minds, I watch Shinny’s post’s and lil rants, and although I gave hands up to the bravery of being open, I wondered wether this book would be an ego trip, but nope, if you actually read or as in my case listen, this is a honest portrait and cautionary tale. I truly hope this was a cathartic exercise for James, I recognised that time in life, and reflected myself on people from my own past who had trodden a similar path, I applaud your down to earth honesty, and wish you all the very best in your ongoing efforts to live the life you deserve.

Down to earth

Like the fact it was Shinny's voice. A lot of what he says is relatable. Good luck to him.

JFW

My first audible purchase. Raw brutal honesty. A literary punch in the stomach. Grateful in recovery.

What a story of transformation

I found James difficult to like and and I really didn't expect that the change. Then I realised this story was like his 4th step. A searching and moral inventory. It's the most honest book I've read and I've read many on alcoholism. He gives you everything in his story and it made me reflect on my own. The manipulation, ego and lies.
James has changed his life and now works to change others. Totally relatable and I ended the book a fan.

Useful Insights

Until recently I have lived with someone with alcohol and drug addiction for a long time now as well as having an alcohol dependent parent, this book has helped me to understand it from their side, lots of the scenarios I could relate too, hard hitting read but nice to hear shinny is doing well in recovery, long may it continue

Absolutely brilliant

Brilliant book highly recommended couldn’t stop listening. An eye opener in the world of addiction and what people go through and how hard it must be

Such an inspirational listen

I enjoyed listening to the whole story, how James opens up is amazing. I can't personally relate to being an addict, however, I feel like the story helps to make you understand what addicts truly go through. I have personally lost someone close to addiction, listening to this makes it make more sense. I feel that if an addict was to listen to this also it would personally help.

DO NOT PURCHASE - VERY DISTURBING CONTENT

NOT A BOOK ABOUT RECOVERY OR ADDICTION, VERY MISLEADING AND SHOULD COME WITH A TRIGGER WARNING

This book has been poorly written, worded and from what I have read, has nothing whatsoever to have anything to do with addiction. The book in my eyes, is about a man that manipulated woman for his own free gain in life. Chapter 5 was so shocking for myself, that I had to stop reading. Sexual offence's throughout chapter 5, all lies throughout the book and has and will trigger survivor's and will certainly not help other's. This man has bragged about this book for over 2 years and what has been said, is totally different in what he has told people in real life. Very disturbing individual. Also as you can see , he hasn’t stopped drinking.

narcissist

This guy is a shining example of everything I hate about being in recovery.

Try as you might at one time or another during your recovery you'll find yourself stuck in a room listening to some self indulgent narcissist bleat on about their very generic, unremarkable tale of addiction like its a complete one off entitling them to your adoration and sympathy.

somehow, someone with little enough knowledge surrounding the subject of addiction. and recovery had seen fit to give this nause a book deal......avoid it there's so many good titles on this subject, this isn't one of them.

if you doubt me type the words "shinny exposed" into YouTube and if after the 3 minutes you don't want to vomit the go ahead and waste another 4 hours of your life

Do not waste a credit or your money

If your looking for a book to help with your recovery then don’t waste your time with this book. This is an autobiography/fictitious book of someone blaming drugs on an out of control ego and sense of entitlement. It would have been slightly better if it had a different reader doing the audio as this voice gave me a headache. The puzzle piece should be renamed “justification for James behaviour” and again the reader was robotic and it added no value. This just came across to me as an individual with a large ego and sense of entitlement wanting to make a few pounds selling a poor quality book on addiction to addicts. Don’t waste your time or money, go buy a book that may help you.
