Summary

Now a major tv drama starring Martin Clunes.

What does it take to catch one of Britain's most feared killers?

Levi Bellfield is one of the most notorious British serial killers of the last fifty years - his name alone evokes horror and revulsion, after his string of brutal murders in the early 2000s.

At 3:07pm on 21st March, 2002, Milly Dowler left her school in Surrey for the last time. Less than an hour later, she was to be abducted and murdered in the cruellest fashion, sparking a missing person investigation that would span months before her body was found.

In the two years that followed, two more young women - Marsha McDonnell and then Amélie Delagrange - were murdered in unspeakably brutal attacks.

Yet with three murdered women on their hands, and few leads open to them, investigating officers were running out of ideas and options, until SIO Colin Sutton was drafted into the investigation for the murder of Delagrange. Seeing a connection between the three women, and thriving under the pressure of a serial killer hunt, Sutton was finally able to bring their murderer to justice after the case had begun to seem hopeless.

Manhunt tells the story of how he led the charge to find a mystery killer, against the clock and against the odds - day by day and lead by lead. At once a gripping police procedural, and an insight into the life of an evil man, this is the story behind what it takes to track down a shockingly violent murderer before he strikes again.

Groundhog Day... not!

As a former police officer, this is not a book I would normally aspire to delve into.
But I recall the case coming to prominence in the news media, shortly before I emigrated from the UK in 2005, and thus my interest was piqued, and when I saw its narrator was the excellent Peter Noble, I was sold. A story told with compassion for the tragedy, and in such a way that I could barely take my headphones off.
A story of genuine substance. Thanks to all involved.

Excellent read

I was unsure of whether to purchase as I saw other reviews talking of mr Sutton’s supposed “overinflated ego”. All I can say is I’m glad I took a chance.
I think Mr Sutton’s accomplishment in securing the evidence against belfield is something he should be extremely proud of- particularly when contrasted against Surrey’s poor job in exploring the evidence in the milly dowler case; and found the book not at all egotistical. Quite the contrary.
It was extremely interesting listen, although desperately sad, to discover the true depth of the evidence against belfield and how truly evil his character is. I was particularly intrigued to hear of his linked phone calls to the metropolitan police although it was not throughly discussed.
Excellent read and well done Mr Sutton and your wonderful team.

A Worthwhile Listen

Just finished this excellent book. Once I started it was hard to stop & in the end listened to it with only two breaks.
I watched Manhunt with Martin Clunes which i really enjoyed, but this was so much more of the complete story & it made me feel as if i was with the detectives on the case.
Highly recommended to anybody that enjoys true crime.

absolutely superb

everything about this story is terrifying and fascinating. the narration is excellent and the content is compelling. thank you for the detail and the candour Mr Sutton. the public need to know the level of detail and graft that goes on behind the media scenes. this is a highly recommended book and i will not forget those women and their stories

Excellent book, slow reader

Thoroughly enjoyed this as not only is it the story of how a serial killer is caught, but it's also a brilliant insight into how a modern police investigation should be done. Written beautifully by an obviously smart and humane man.

The person reading it though needs his engine cranking up. I had to listen at 1.10 speed to make him bearable.

Interesting and insightful book

Very interesting book that delves into the complicated investigation and trial of a serial killer. This book not only highlights the complexities of a police investigation into a number of murders and unprovoked attacks but also the personal toil that is involved in preparing for court, time pressures and assessing which cases had the largest chance of getting a prosecution. It is an interesting read and had a pressure in it that felt similar to a novel. It is worth a read.

Benchmark stuff!

Aside from the harrowing realities and impact of these murders, this account gives an enlightening insight into exhaustive case working and police politics. I think the author has done his best to heap praise on the team effort it took, to bring an abhorrent pile of walking bile to justice. I only hope that similar resources and focus will still be available in today's stretched and scrutinized police forces.
