Great Fun and better than any anti-depressant…

Mark Steel’s in Town series are non-stop fun, whimsical, intelligent, he mixes fact and humour in his trademark style. Please release his many lectures on historical characters.

Gets better every year

I remember mark Steel when he started in stand up. He was a slow-burner but one night compere Arthur smith said after Mark's set, 'mark steel ladies and gentlemen taking the roof off!' He stormed the gig and I became a fan. His radio shows are remarkably different to his stand up and again it took a while for me to like it. I'm now quite an annoying fan of his series as I just don't get how anyone can not like it! Truly brilliant and original work. On a final note; whatever happened to the compere Arthur Smith?

If you want to laugh at yourself, talk to this man

Would you listen to Mark Steel's in Town: Series 3 & 4 Plus Edinburgh Special again? Why?

There is something extraordinarily cathartic about hearing comedy that is clever (not unusual) but also well intentioned; there is nothing cruel or dismissive about this body of work, and yet it is not lightweight or floppy either. This would have to be as engaging a body of work as I have ever heard.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I bought the next series

What does Mark Steel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I am not aware of a book to buy.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Let me tell you about you.

Any additional comments?

This says there is an Edinburgh special included, but I suspect there may be an error with the recording; not only was there none, but the first episode was repeated (ie, I think that this was done very early on a monday morning after a significantly involved weekend)

If you've heard one town, you've heard them all.

I like Mark Steel's style of storytelling and his delivery and always have. His simple and intelligent force are always refreshing. I found his Town series funny but after listening to a few, they all follow the same thread and you end up already knowing the end of jokes and the tie up at the end of the program.

Best not to listen to in one hit driving, but come back to them after a few weeks, its much more enjoyable.
