Summary

Doctors are more than doctors. They’re detectives who solve mysteries about the human body.

Diagnosing patients is about looking for clues, whether a persistent tickle in the back of the throat or confusion and memory loss. Just like detectives, good doctors sift through information until they arrive at the medical solution that fits best.

Think you have what it takes to keep up with medical detective work? Find out with this second installment of Dr. Roy Benaroch’s thrilling look at medical mysteries from across history. Continuing the excitement of his earlier Audible Original, Medical Mysteries Across History, Pt.2 features cases involving ancient kings and military leaders, beloved philosophers and popular entertainers. You may know who some of these patients are - but you’ve almost certainly never heard their stories told from a doctor’s point of view.

In each instance, you’ll learn about the medicine that was practiced during the patient’s life, and you’ll discover how modern medicine can shed light on the past. You’ll see how every life (and every disease) is a story and that these stories reveal the clues doctors need to make an accurate diagnosis. And you’ll discover that while a lot in medicine has certainly changed, the way doctors approach patients hasn’t changed very much at all.

Think you can guess who these 10 mystery patients are? Pay attention. The medical and historical hints are there and waiting for you.

Play a medical detective game!

This audiobook not only presents fascinating cases from the history of medicine but also lets you play a fun game of guessing who was the patient and what's the correct diagnosis. I found it very engaging and entertaining. Obviously, you have to have some basic knowledge of medicine to appreciate the full extent of its content, although the language is quite simple and the author explains more complex ideas in lay words. Brilliant
food for thought, even for experienced clinicians.
Very well narrated.
Long story short - 10/10

Humane, fluent, fascinating

I highly rate both volumes of this audiobook. The lectures are both precise and relaxed, with an approach to medicine that includes due emphasis on the human and environmental factors at work in the lives of the famous patients described, as well as clear and cogent descriptions of the physiological and disease processes that are accessible to the lay person without being patronising. Dr Ray Benaroch seems like a really nice bloke and it was my great pleasure to spend nine or ten hours in his company.

Informative

This is a very different book from what I was expecting, I did guess a few of the patients, and I also worked out a few of their illnesses to, but that was from my own personal experience not from medical training!
A worthwhile listen, also may help you to bot get frustrated with your doctor for asking what seems to be random or repetitive questions.

A good medical run through some famous cases

Pretty good. Quite interesting but fairly well known cases. The narrator was a bit fast.
