Summary

The Metro books have put Dmitry Glukhovsky in the vanguard of Russian speculative fiction alongside the creator of Night Watch, Sergei Lukyanenko. A year after the events of Metro 2033, the last few survivors of the apocalypse, surrounded by mutants and monsters, face a terrifying new danger as they hang on for survival in the tunnels of the Moscow Metro. Featuring blistering action, vivid and tough characters, claustrophobic tension and dark satire, the Metro books have become bestsellers across Europe.

decent read, slower pace compared to first book

definitely worth to read if you enjoyed the first book.
however it's pace is a lot slower and you should not place unreasonable expectations for it to be the same as 2033.

Forgettable story

Didn't like the story that much, the first book was much greater in this regard. But the voice acting was spot on.

too slow

I really struggled to finish it. I've read the first in the series and found that one slow, but it built up to a good finish. This book seemed to do nothing more than describe and build a story, without actually telling one. There was no climax and no excitement, when it finished it was a real surprise!

alright on its own, not as good as the first

not as good as the first, a bit too all over the place, but still good, with likable characters that get you to see it through to the end

Not as good as the first

Weaker story and hard to follow at first, I also don't like the way they have translated the station names in this one

Not a sequel

2033 is far better and I would have thought 2034 would continue the story of artyom but it doesn’t it’s very descriptive but sometimes confusing as the story flips between characters

Confusing to start, but comes together really nicely

At first I did find the story kind of al over the place. I would have expected Artyom to feature as a main character but he only makes a few brief appearances. As the story went on and I got to know the other characters, I really enjoyed the story. Because of artyoms brief appearances and how al the characters individual stories all come together, I really feel like this is more a prequel to the next book rather than a sequel to 2033, although I’m yet to read 2035. For anyone who struggles at the start to stay invested I the story I would say stick it out you won’t regret it. Outstanding storytelling from Degas as per

Nothing like the same draw as the first book

This story is somewhat interesting, but I don't really care about any of the characters nor do I feel much underlying story arc - I'm not actually sure what's real or what's significant, but I feel like I'm meant to.

Second point is the first book had no female characters - that's okay for me as a guy, I can live with it. Boring, but I can live with it. This book is just so steeped in misogyny and terrible female character writing that it's almost sickeningly dull. I can attest that the Russian girls I've met have, fortunately, very much not been like those Dmitry Glukhovsky is capable of imagining.
