Summary

Vampires have always lived in Eastern Europe. But with the fall of the Soviet Union, they began to spread across the continent, then the world, turning whole populations into vampires - or human cattle. Having overrun India, the far East, and the great cities of North and South America, the forces of Night are now spreading into the countryside to consolidate their conquest.

In a town on the New Jersey shore, the vampires have just arrived, along with their human henchmen, the cowboys, who round up human cattle for the overlords in return for the promise of eternal life - later. For the vampires wish only a few of their own kind to rule, and feed. The rest of humanity are to be helpless herds, the source of the blood of life.

Falsely accused of abuse, Father Joe is drunk in a basement waiting for the end. His superior has betrayed the local Catholic congregation and become a vampire. Sister Carolyn has become a formidable killer of cowboys and vampires. Joe's niece, escaped from the conquest of New York, has made her way south to find him. Brought together by Rabbi Zev Wolpin, who is shaken by the vampires’ fear of the cross and holy water, they plan their resistance. Against all odds, they discover that there just might be a way for humanity to really fight back. But first they will have to kill the vampire king of New York.

SUCH A WELCOME SURPRISE

I purchased this book because, essentially, I'll buy anything with vampires in it. To say that I was surprised is an understatement. It is fantastic, better even, in my humble opinion, than Salem's Lot, which I read at least twice a year.

Incredible stuff.

Post-Apocalypse Vampire Horror

This book leaves me longing for more from the adventures of the protagonists. The internal struggles of the characters are just as gripping as the action.

Great, classic vampire story

Really enjoyed this book. A proper vampire story with proper vampires - no sparkles in sight.

Narration is good although his female voices aren't always distinct so knowing who's speaking is often more about the language used rather than the voice.

Ole fashioned vampires

Very good sticking to the Vampire basics in an effective manner with a superb narrator.

Great story

Really enjoyed this book, not sure if the Netflix series was based on this but if so I would say very loosely based,
Narration was great and I could really lose myself in the story if you like a vampire tale then give this a listen

Grippingly Original

Despite some disparaging remarks cast towards Anne Rice's vampires (I also love Anne Rice - could he not have complained about other fantasy writers besides?) I enjoyed this audiobook a lot. Despite there having been SO MANY takes on vampire lore since Bram Stoker penned Dracula, the elements of this story still seem refreshingly original even as the vampires themselves exude the low cunning and evil single-mindedness that Stoker's antagonist embodied. I like the take on religious iconography being useful in combating the vamps, and the hint of ambiguity about where the power for good truly originates from. If I had one complaint, as a non-American reader, it's the usual annoyance at the fact in the event of a vampire apocalypse the only true bastions of human strength and rebellion can be found on US soil. It would be nice to read something more inclusive and less US-centric. Otherwise, I enjoyed this very much.

Good but frustrating

The story is solid, however the characters can be so infuriatingly stupid it brings you right out of the story. Also its 'rules' re vampires are inconsistent I think at times as the author wrote himself into a few corners. Good voice performance. Definitely worth a punt for free though

If you like vampires you’ll like this!

Really enjoyed this! I love a good vampire tale! This isn’t as deep as something like Salam’s lot but super fun and enjoyable!

Pretty Good

Not bad, compelling to start but then fizzles out a bit. A bit like a audible horror movie, exciting in places, pretty

gratuitous but enjoyable, nothing that will require too much concentration. Ideal for a long journey or as a backdrop to some DIY.

Not the Netflix story but still enthralling

Didn't expect to be as good as it was. Made me want to watch 90s Blade all over again!
