Summary

It is spring 1916, and Great Britain is at war with Germany. On the home front, stylish lady detective Miss Isabel Hewitt has joined the Women's Emergency Corps. Her duties include driving a military ambulance. But she continues with her detective work.

One morning, she is approached by a wealthy young woman Miss Jen-Eva Howard. This lady's fiancé, a journalist by the name of Giles Chichester, has been brutally murdered. The police are making no headway, and Miss Howard asks Isabel to investigate and get justice for Giles. Isabel agrees, but soon discovers Chichester was an unpleasant sort of man. He liked writing contentious articles for his magazine Dyke's Progress. He has upset a lot of people, so there might be many with an axe to grind.

She begins her investigation, despite being warned off by Sergeant Perch from Scotland Yard. A case Giles was researching requires Isabel to go undercover, but the key to the mystery appears to be a white cat. She must discover who owns the cat and then prove they are the murderer. The outcome tests Isabel's hitherto unshakeable belief in justice.

Cozy mystery with teeth!

I love Miss Hewitt mysteries!! They have been so well written and performed. This one is no exception except this one is a lot deeper and darker than the others. It’s like this one has more “teeth” than other cozy mysteries. The author obviously knows her history as well! I can’t recommend this book enough! Historical fiction with a modern subject. Extremely interesting.

Excellent story, beautifully read.

I really enjoy this series, there's lots of interesting and informative details to enrich this immersive period cosy mystery. There are twists and turns punctuated with the occasional puggy aside. The narrator uses a broad range of authentic accents to keep the soundscape diverse and maintain character clarity during dialogue. Excellent!

Miss Hewitt solves another case.

keeping up the high standard of ingenuity and entertainment . An exciting finish which is characteristic of Linda Stephensons Miss Hewitt books. The narrator Julia Eve showed considerable acting skills with the different character voices, specially Reggie Biddle.
